Job Description:

The Department of Classics welcomes applications from candidates who value as we do an integrated approach to teaching, collaborative learning, and scholarship. We seek a broadly-trained classicist with expertise in any of the following areas: Latin prose, Roman history, social history, historiography, Tacitus, Cicero. Candidates must have a thoughtful approach to teaching Greek and Latin, to the rigorous application of technology to humanism, and to engaging the broadest possible community in the study of the ancient world.

Applicants should be prepared to teach a wide range of undergraduate courses in our curriculum, including Greek and Latin at all levels of instruction and thematic courses in classical civilization and culture. The teaching load is five courses over two semesters. Other duties include mentoring and collaborating with undergraduate students on research projects, and contributing to the administrative responsibilities of the Department and the University. A Ph.D. in Classics or a related field is required by August 1, 2027.

The deadline for application is October 31, 2026. Review of applications will begin immediately. We will conduct initial interviews by Zoom in late November or early December.

In the letter of interest, describe how you would teach an upper-level Latin language course and a topical Roman-themed course aimed at the general-education student, and how you would foster undergraduate research. The statement of teaching philosophy should describe your inclusive teaching and mentoring efforts, broadly conceived, and how your teaching and mentoring may contribute to a liberal arts and sciences community that aims, among other things, to "honor inquiry, promote diversity, [and] strive for equity" (Future Focused). You may also discuss any relevant professional development, service contributions, or other experiences that have refined your skills or that demonstrate your efforts in these areas.
