Job summary

Texas Department of Transportation is seeking an Area Office Supervisor with a Bachelor’s degree in engineering and 4 years in transportation engineering. You will assist the Area Engineer, plan personnel and equipment, supervise maintenance and construction activities, and ensure safety and quality on projects.

Responsibilities include coordinating traffic control, preparing cost estimates, training staff, and resolving public concerns while working with officials to meet program goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science accepted by TX PELS.
  • 4 years transportation engineering experience; graduate level education may substitute on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid driver's license; ability to drive a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer; if licensed in another state, must obtain Texas licensure within six months of hire.

  • Determine quantities and cost estimates.
  • Inspect roads and coordinate maintenance with construction projects.

Job description

Assists in directing area office operations. Assists in managing and/or supervises employees involved in construction, design, maintenance, survey, laboratory activities and/or office operations. Reports to the Area Engineer, who has full authority for approval of all work. Responsible for the operations of the area office in the absence of the Area Engineer. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:
  • Assists Area Engineer in projecting personnel and equipment needed for each project; as required responds for emergency situations/conditions to assist with office activities
  • Conducts pre-construction, Employee Forum and/or safety meetings
  • Determines quantities and estimates cost
  • Inspects roads, monitors maintenance activities and coordinates scheduling of maintenance work with construction projects
  • Monitors traffic control plans
  • Performs research and planning on future projects
  • Plans and schedules work of construction personnel and/or provides them on the job training
  • Prepares and/or recommends field changes and supplemental agreements
  • Prepares and/or reviews monthly and final estimates and final construction reports
  • Resolves public complaints
  • Works with governmental officials on behalf of the Area Engineer
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education : Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
  • Experience : 4 years transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Licenses and Certifications : Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*
    *Professional engineers licensed in another state i n the United States , but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools

  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
