Job summary

Town of Berlin (Connecticut) is seeking an Assistant Animal Control Officer for part-time hours (20 per week). The role includes patrols, animal canines and wildlife control, handling complaints, and maintaining the animal shelter under the Police Department SOPs. Starting salary is $27.97 per hour.

Qualifications include a high school diploma with 3-5 years in animal control, knowledge of relevant statutes, and a valid CT driver’s license. Firearm qualification is required for wildlife disposal.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Responds to citizen complaints in courteous efficient manner.
  • Impounds roaming, injured or mistreated dogs and notifies owners of same.
  • Responds to complaints and conducts investigations as necessary; disposes of and/or humanely destroys severely injured animals when appropriate.
  • Conducts surveys of unlicensed dogs under Section 22-349 CGS and provides residence with the necessary information to attain proper licensure.
  • Educates and informs animal owners of their legal responsibilities.
  • Enforces the laws and ordinances of the state and town concerning animals and takes necessary enforcement action.
  • Maintains public contact through news releases, speaking to schools, civic and animal care groups.
  • Maintains and cleans animal facility; conducts maintenance and repair on department equipment.
  • Maintains Department records and logs; collaborates with Town Clerk’s office and other departments.
  • Performs all other functions relating to statutory duties of an Animal Control Officer.

Job Title: Assistant Animal Control Officer
Hours: (20) per week, Fri – 8:30am – 4:30pm / Sat – Sun, 8am – 2pm

Union Affiliation: Blue Collar

Starting Salary: Maintainer III - $27.97/hour

Function: Under the direction of the Police Department, conducts patrols, law enforcement and other duties related to canines, domestic animals (including birds and reptiles) and all other animals pursuant to Connecticut General Statutes, Town Ordinances and Berlin Police Department Standard Operating Procedures. Receives and investigates complaints relating to animals. Maintains the animal control shelter. Preserve the safety of citizens and animals, and perform related work as required.

Typical Duties, Responsibilities, Tasks & Assignments:

  • Responds to citizen complaints in courteous efficient manner.

  • Enforces the laws and ordinances of the state and town concerning animals. Takes necessary enforcement action in accordance with law and department policy.
  • Maintains public contact through news releases, speaking to schools, civic and animal care groups with prior approval of Town Manager or his/her designee.
  • Maintains and cleans animal facility. Conducts maintenance and repair functions on department equipment as necessary.
  • Maintains Department records and logs as necessary and works in collaboration with Town Clerk’s office, and various other departments with regard to the operation of Animal Control Department.
  • Performs all other functions relating to statutory duties of an Animal Control Officer to ensure health and safety of animals, citizens and property.

Special Skills & Requirements: High school diploma with a minimum of 3-5 years experience working in animal control or animal environment required. Current knowledge of state and local Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Driver’s License. Position requires qualification and use of firearm/shotgun for wildlife disposal.

Physical Requirements:
The duties of this job may include physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, bending/twisting, and performing repetitive motions. Requires the ability to apprehend and care for canines, including ability to lift 50 pounds or more, as well as work in adverse weather conditions, and respond to emergency calls after hours.
