Job summary

MBTA is seeking an Asset Analytics Manager to lead data analytics and reporting for the Asset Management Program. The role focuses on transforming asset, maintenance, financial, and condition data into insights that guide lifecycle management and capital investment decisions.

The ideal candidate will develop dashboards, KPIs, and analytical frameworks, collaborate across departments, and advance predictive analytics and continuous improvement initiatives within the transit authority.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, information systems, data analytics, or related field.
  • 5 years of professional experience in data analytics, reporting, or transportation analytics.
  • 1 year of supervisory or large project management experience.
  • Experience building dashboards and BI reports.
  • Experience analyzing large datasets and translating findings into business recommendations.
  • Experience with databases, reporting platforms, and data integration.
  • Willingness to travel to MBTA worksites in the Boston area.
  • Ability to work across shifts and locations, including 24/7 coverage if needed.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

In accordance with Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Transit Asset Management (TAM) requirements (49 CFR 625, 630, and 673), the Asset Analytics Manager leads the data analytics, and reporting activities, supporting the MBTA Asset Management Program.

The position is responsible for transforming asset, maintenance, operational, financial, and condition data into meaningful insights that support lifecycle management, capital investment, maintenance optimization, regulatory reporting, and executive decision-making. The role develops reporting strategies, analytical frameworks, dashboards, and performance metrics that improve the accessibility, quality, and usability of information used throughout the Authority.

Working collaboratively with Asset Information, Asset Planning, Engineering, Operations, Capital Delivery, Information Technology, Finance, and Enterprise Asset Management System (EAMS) teams, the Asset Analytics Manager advances a data-driven Asset Management Program through analytics strategies, predictive analytics, performance reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities
Business Intelligence & Reporting
  • Lead the development and implementation of analytics strategies supporting the Asset Management Program.
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve executive dashboards, scorecards, reports, visualizations, and analytical tools supporting engineering, maintenance, operations, capital planning, and executive leadership.
  • Establish reporting standards, key performance indicators (KPIs), data definitions, and visualization best practices to ensure consistent reporting.
  • Translate complex technical and operational data into actionable business insights and recommendations for executive leadership.
  • Prepare executive reports, presentations, performance summaries, and decision-support materials.
Advanced Analytics
  • Analyze asset condition, inventory, maintenance, financial, operational, and lifecycle data to support capital investment, maintenance planning, State of Good Repair (SGR), and lifecycle management initiatives.
  • Develop predictive models, trend analyses, forecasting methodologies, and scenario analyses supporting long-term asset investment strategies.
  • Evaluate asset performance, maintenance effectiveness, reliability, risk, and lifecycle costs to identify opportunities for operational improvement.
  • Support Transit Asset Management (TAM), National Transit Database (NTD), Capital Investment Plan (CIP), and other regulatory or strategic reporting requirements.
  • Develop analytical methodologies supporting asset prioritization, investment optimization, and performance management.
Data Architecture & Integration
  • Partner with Information Technology and Enterprise Asset Management System (EAMS) teams to develop automated reporting solutions, data pipelines, integrations, and reporting environments.
  • Integrate and analyze information from Enterprise Asset Management Systems (EAMS), GIS, financial systems, inspection platforms, maintenance systems, and other data sources.
  • Define reporting requirements, analytical models, and data structures supporting Asset Management business processes.
  • Support development of analytics standards, reporting governance, metadata, and documentation.
Asset Management Support
  • Collaborate with Asset Information Managers to ensure asset information is effectively translated into meaningful analytics and performance reporting.
  • Support strategic asset management initiatives through quantitative analysis and data-driven recommendations.
  • Monitor asset management performance measures and recommend opportunities to improve business processes, reporting capabilities, and operational performance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying trends, inefficiencies, risks, and opportunities through advanced analytics.
Technical Leadership
  • Lead analytical initiatives and provide technical guidance to Analysts, Coordinators, consultants, interns, contractors, and cross-functional project teams.
  • Mentor staff in reporting methodologies, data visualization, business intelligence tools, and analytical best practices.
  • Manage consultant deliverables supporting business intelligence, reporting, and analytics initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with MBTA policies, federal regulations, industry standards, and reporting requirements.
  • Conduct field visits to validate asset information, condition assessments, and infrastructure documentation as needed.
  • Respond or report to work as directed by supervisory personnel for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Perform related duties and projects as assigned.

Supervision
  • Provides indirect oversight and technical guidance for Coordinators, Analysts, interns, contractors, consultants, and other personnel supporting asset analytics and reporting activities.
Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Engineering, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Data Science, Transportation, Business Analytics/Administration, Geography/GIS, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience supporting one or more of the following: data analysis, reporting, transportation analytics, infrastructure analytics, engineering analytics, maintenance analytics, or related technical environments.
  • One (1) year of supervisory, technical leadership, or large project management experience.
  • Experience developing dashboards, business intelligence reports, and data visualizations.
  • Experience analyzing large, complex datasets and translating technical findings into business recommendations.
  • Experience working with databases, reporting platforms, and data integration processes.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical, operational, and asset-related data.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional analytical initiatives and communicate findings to contractors, consultants, operational departments, and technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to travel to various MBTA worksites, offices, and locations.
  • Ability to work any shifts and / or locations assigned or directed.
  • Be available to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week, 365 days per year.
Substitutions
  • A high school diploma or GED with an additional seven (7) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor’s degree requirement.
  • An associate’s degree from an accredited institution and an additional three (3) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor’s degree requirement.
  • A master’s degree in a related subject substitutes for two (2) years of general experience.
  • A nationally recognized certification, or statewide/professional certification in a related field substitutes for one year of experience.
Preferred Experience & Skills
  • Experience working in transit, railroad, transportation, infrastructure, engineering, maintenance, or capital planning environments.
  • Experience supporting asset management reporting, capital planning analytics, condition assessment programs, or lifecycle management activities.
  • Familiarity with Enterprise Asset Management Systems (EAMS), Tableau, Power BI, SQL, GIS platforms, or other reporting and visualization tools.
  • Familiarity with asset lifecycle management principles, infrastructure performance metrics, or capital planning processes.
  • Familiarity with data warehousing, API integrations, cloud-based analytics platforms, and enterprise reporting architecture.
  • Knowledge of Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Transit Asset Management (TAM), National Transit Database (NTD), State of Good Repair (SGR), and Capital Investment Planning processes.
  • Professional certifications such as Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst, Tableau Certified Professional, PMP, GIS, Lean Six Sigma, Institute of Asset Management (IAM), or equivalent.
Job Conditions

  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service.
  • Intern / co-op staff must be enrolled full or part-time in an accredited educational program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the entire duration of the internship / co-op. Additionally, interns / co-ops must have valid work authorization and U.S. Social Security Number prior to starting pre-employment screenings / pre-boarding, working in their positions, and throughout the duration of their program.

Intern / Co-Op Benefits: Employees taking part in an internship or co-op at the MBTA are eligible to receive accrued paid sick leave as well as a monthly transportation pass, based on the city from which the intern / co-op commutes to work, at no cost. However, no additional benefits are currently offered for interns or co-ops.
