Job summary

Nordex Group in the United States (Iowa) is seeking an Assembly Operator - Mechanical Production Technician to build wind turbine components including nacelles, hubs, and drive trains following quality and safety procedures.

The role requires mechanical assembly experience, ability to read blueprints, and commitment to safety. You will use hand tools, power tools, and overhead cranes while collaborating with QA and Engineering to improve processes and resolve issues.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Mechanical certifications or technical training.
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical assembly or heavy manufacturing.
  • Ability to read work instructions and blueprints.
  • Experience with wind turbine, automotive, or industrial equipment assembly.
  • Must be able to pass a respiratory fit test.
  • Proficiency with overhead crane operation and torque tools.
  • ISO 9000 knowledge is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble mechanical components of wind turbines using hand tools, power tools, and overhead cranes.
  • Follow detailed work instructions and engineering drawings to ensure accurate builds.
  • Perform torquing, alignment, and fit‑up of large components such as gearboxes, bearings, and shafts.
  • Conduct safety inspections and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Exceed production benchmarks by completing tasks within the designated timeframe.
  • Handle materials by lifting, positioning, and removing them from the work area as needed.
  • Collaborate with quality and engineering teams to improve assembly processes.
  • Participate in internal audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support other production areas as needed and as assigned by the supervisor.
  • In coordination with PQA and Engineering, conduct root cause analysis and troubleshooting of production problems.

Position Summary

The role of Assembly Operator - Mechanical Production Technician - directly supports the company’s mission to develop and deliver clean power plants that make 100% renewable energy a reality for the world. As an Assembly Operator - Mechanical Production Technician, you will play a key role in building the structural and mechanical components of wind turbines, including the nacelle (Machine House), hubs, and drive trains according to established quality, safety and environmental procedures. This position is ideal for individuals with a background in mechanical assembly, construction, or automotive work who are passionate about renewable energy and precision craftsmanship.

What You’ll Do
  • Assemble mechanical components of wind turbines using hand tools, power tools, and overhead cranes.
  • Follow detailed work instructions and engineering drawings to ensure accurate builds.
  • Perform torquing, alignment, and fit‑up of large components such as gearboxes, bearings, and shafts.
  • Conduct safety inspections and maintain a clean, organized work area to present work related injuries.
  • Exceed our production benchmarks by completing specific tasks within the designated timeframe, playing a key role in the collective success of our team objectives.
  • Handle materials by lifting, positioning, and/or removing them from the work area as needed.
  • Collaborate with quality and engineering teams to improve assembly processes.
  • Participate in internal audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support other production areas as needed and as assigned by the supervisor.
  • In coordination with PQA and Engineering Departments, conduct root cause analysis and troubleshooting of potential production problems.
  • Assist electrical assembly operators as required.
What You Have
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Mechanical certifications or technical training.
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical assembly or heavy manufacturing.
  • Ability to read work instructions.
  • Experience in wind turbine, automotive, or industrial equipment assembly.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands‑on experience.
  • Commitment to safety and quality standards.
  • Ability to work in a team‑oriented, fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong work ethic and dedication to completing tasks.
  • Responsible and accountable for actions and decisions.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn and grow.
  • Ability to read mechanical blueprints and technical documentation.
  • Experience with overhead crane operation.
  • Ability to achieve and maintain crane operator certification (Required).
  • Proficiency in using torque tools, pneumatic and hydraulic tools, and measuring instruments.
  • Must be able to pass a respiratory fit test (as Required).
  • Working at heights.
  • Understanding of ISO 9000:2000 Quality System is a plus.
