Job summary

Thorlabs is seeking an Assembly Technician to join our LEAN Manufacturing team in Newton, NJ. You will assemble components and products, inspect and test assemblies, and ensure quality while coordinating with Assembly, Planning, and Quality teams to meet production timelines.

The role requires 1–3 years of experience and a High School diploma or equivalent. Expect a fast-paced environment with cross-training and strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Assemble components and products of varying size and complexity, including cleaning, inspecting, and testing.

• Meet production order timelines and maintain accurate records and reports.
• Maintain a safe, clean working environment and comply with policies and procedures.
• Cross-train on functions to support production operations.

The position works among of team of individuals assembling mechanical products for our customers. As part of our LEAN Manufacturing business strategy, the position works closely with the assembly supervisors and the purchasing/planning departments with the general administration of Production Orders, Customer Return Merchandise Authorizations (RMA’s), and Picking Order Lists. Works under general supervision. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following

but are not limited to:

• Must be able to understand written work instructions for a wide range of products to properly assemble the final product to the highest quality standards and with zero scrap or rework.
• Serves as a liaison between Assembly, Purchase Planning, Quality, and RMA; Conducts limited research, performs clerical duties requiring general knowledge and application of various work methods and procedures, and types or enters information into computer to prepare correspondence.
• Assemble components and products of varying size and complexity including cleaning, inspecting, and testing of assembled components and assemblies.
• Meets the expected assembly timelines that are outlined on the production orders.
• Remain focused on the production orders and assembly responsibilities throughout the day.
• Cross-trains on various functions to provide flexibility and support across production operations.
• Must maintain a safe and clean working environment through compliance with procedures, policies, and regulations.
• Maintain accurate records, prepare reports for identification purposes such as test reports, and move material to and from work areas.
• Ability to learn new skills and become proficient at a wide range of assemblies.
• Maintain and update skills required to assemble any product with Mechanical Assembly

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

• Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
• Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standardw of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of jobrelated equipment and tools. .

Experience:

• Minimum 1-3 years of experience in a similar position preferred.

Education:

• High School diploma or equivalent

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

• Strong attention to detail
• Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere, and comply with high quality standards.
• Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities.

The hourly rate for this position is $21.40
