Job summary

Wabtec Corporation in Chicago manufactures equipment for freight rail and offers a hands-on manufacturing role on the shop floor. You will assemble metal components such as draft gears and slack adjusters, reading blueprints and following safety rules to ensure quality output.

You will work with drill presses, rivet machines, and other assembly tools, maintain 5S standards, and collaborate with teammates to meet daily production goals and safety requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or related experience is acceptable.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedures.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Attention to quality and safety in a manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble metal parts according to blueprints and work instructions.
  • Fasten components with bolts, screws, rivets and other fasteners.
  • Operate drill presses, punch presses, and riveting machines as needed.
  • Disassemble parts for salvage and reuse when required.
  • Maintain 5S standards in the work area.
  • Perform duties of Material Handler or Laborer as needed.

This Chicago location provides energy management systems to the Freight Car Market; Draft Gears, Slack Adjusters, Handbrakes, Spherical Articulated Connectors, TMX/UBX Truck Mounted Brake Systems.

How will you make a difference?

As a member of the Chicago location of Wabtec, you will be responsible for production of quality products. You will assemble metal products, such as draft gears, slack adjusters, handbrakes, or hydraulic cylinders, partially or completely, working at a bench or on the shop floor by performing the following duties.

What will your typical day look like?
  • Positions parts according to knowledge of unit being assembled or following blueprints.
  • Fastens parts together with bolts, screws, speed clips, rivets, or other fasteners.
  • Removes small quantities of metal with hand files and scrapers to produce close fit between parts.
  • Operates drill presses, punch presses, or riveting machines to assist in assembly operation.
  • Disassembles draft gears, slack adjusters, handbrakes for salvage of parts.
  • Ensures areas are maintained according to 5S principles.
  • Performs all duties of Material Handler or Laborer.

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The hourly rate for this role is in the range of $18.50 - $20.00 per hour.
