Job summary

Qualifications

• Associate degree required.
• HT(ASCP) certification required OR completed a technician training program or on‑the-job hospital training with 4 years’ experience.
• 1 year Mohs experience highly preferred.
• Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language.
• Knowledge/skill of appropriate collection techniques.
• Interacts with patients according to the Erickson model of development.
• Skills for accepting responsibility, making decisions, and working as a team.

Responsibilities

• Prepare specimen using the appropriate technique required to produce an acceptable sample for evaluation by the pathologist.
• Follows established procedures for histology quality control, CAP, JCAHO, other regulatory agencies and reports discrepancies in a timely manner.
• Performs scheduled and as needed maintenance on equipment routinely used in specimen preparation.
• Troubleshoots equipment, reagents, or procedural technique when problems occur.
• Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures.
• Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety and specific job-related hazards.
• Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
• Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment.
• Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
• Assists with the orientation of new histology lab employees.
• Maintains work area—cleans bench, restocks supplies notifies Histology Technical Specialist of low stock.
