Michigan Surgical Center and Town Center Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) are seeking a Pre-Admit Testing Specialist (RN) to join our perioperative team. This role is based at our Utica and Troy locations with a predictable Monday–Friday schedule.

You will conduct pre-screening, review medical histories, coordinate clearances, and perform tests such as EKGs and blood draws, supporting surgeons and anesthesia teams.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Active RN license in the State of Michigan.
  • 2+ years of perioperative, surgical, pre-admission testing, or related nursing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct pre-screening assessments with patients by phone.
  • Review patient medical history, symptoms, medications and concerns.
  • Identify urgent symptoms and escalate appropriately.
  • Coordinate with cardiologists, PCPs, and other providers for clearances.
  • Perform testing (EKG, blood draws) and document results.

You will divide your time between our Utica and Troy locations and work closely with patients, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients are appropriately prepared for their procedures.

What You’ll Do
  • Conduct pre-screening assessments with patients by phone.
  • Review patient medical history, symptoms, medications, and current concerns.
  • Identify urgent or emergent symptoms and escalate appropriately.
  • Conduct patient interviews and clinical assessments as part of the pre-admission process.
  • Coordinate with cardiologists, PCPs, and other providers when medical clearance is needed based on the patient's medical history and planned procedure.
  • Perform ordered testing, including EKGs and blood draws for laboratory testing.
  • Provide basic health education and pre-operative instructions within nursing scope of practice.
  • Accurately document patient assessments, communications, and interactions in the electronic medical record.
  • Communicate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Provide compassionate, professional, and patient-centered service throughout the pre-operative process.
What We’re Looking For
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Active RN license in the State of Michigan.
  • At least 2 years of perioperative, surgical, pre-admission testing, or related clinical nursing experience preferred.
  • Strong assessment, communication, and clinical judgment skills.
  • Experience with telephone-based patient assessments and triage is preferred.
  • Comfortable communicating with physicians, cardiologists, PCPs, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ability and willingness to travel between the Utica and Troy locations.

General Summary

The ASC Pre-Admit Testing Specialist, RN is responsible for overseeing intake, performing an initial physical assessment, interviewing the patient to obtain medical history, and performing tests ordered by the surgeon such as EKG and drawing blood for lab work. The Pre-Admit Testing Specialist works closely with the surgeon and anesthesia team to ensure the patient is ready for surgery.

Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Gathers pertinent patient information related to the scheduled case.
  • Arranges collected data into the appropriate patient record.
  • Utilizes critical thinking in the assessment of patients.
  • Responsible for contacting all patients scheduled for surgery to assess their biophysical, psychosocial, spiritual, cultural, and educational status.
  • Develops an individualized perioperative patient plan of care.
  • Serves as a liaison between physician offices and the surgical team.
  • Administers medications safely and correctly.
  • Assess the knowledge level of the patient or designated support person. Provides education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure.
  • Actively involves the patient or designated support person in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation process, and discharge planning. Evaluates the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes.

  • Ensures that documentation is completed in a timely and thorough manner, which is able to be read and understood by clinical staff.
  • Contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through excellence in customer service and performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care.

  • Employees shall adhere to high standards of ethical conduct and will comply with and assist in complying with all applicable laws and regulations. This will include and not be limited to following the Solaris Health Code of Conduct and all Solaris Health and Affiliated Practice policies and procedures; maintaining the confidentiality of patients' protected health information in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA); immediately reporting any suspected concerns and/or violations to a supervisor and/or the Compliance Department; and the timely completion the Annual Compliance Training.
Certifications, Licensures Or Registry Requirements
  • RN license and certificate as required by state.
  • BLS certification required, ACLS preferred.
  • Certified Nurse Post-Anesthesia (CAPA) preferred.
