Job summary

Mid-State Orthopaedic and Sports Medicin in Louisiana seeks a central sterile technician to support operating rooms and ambulatory surgery centers. You will organize instruments, ensure sterility, and verify equipment functionality to maintain efficient surgical workflows.

  • Maintains cleaning and sterilization logs per facility policy.
  • Transports patients to and from and within the facility.
  • Assists with OR turnover and preparation of sterile supplies.

Job description

Education/Experience/Licenses/Certificates/Eligibility: Central sterile or operating room experience required. Current BLS.

Eligibility: All employees must be able to provide proof of their identity and their right to work in the United States.

Knowledge: Working knowledge and experience in a hospital central sterile department, operating room or ambulatory surgery center. Knowledge of instrument names and their care and handling procedures. Sterilization and disinfection.

Machines, Equipment, Work Aids: Telephone and fax. Autoclave, ultrasonic cleaner, biological test incubator, medical gas canisters, surgical instruments, equipment, machinery and medical supplies.

Work Environment: Occasional overtime. Must handle stress in meeting time demands.

Clinical Performance

  • Wears appropriate attire in restricted areas.

Provides Technical Support Service

  • Anticipates the need for equipment and supplies.
  • Selects equipment and supplies in an organized, cost effective and timely manner.
  • Assures all equipment is functioning before use and removes any malfunctioning equipment.
  • Demonstrates skill in appropriate use of instruments and equipment.
  • Operates mechanical, electrical and air-powered equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Assures emergency equipment and supplies are available at all times.
  • Keeps surgical suites clean, tidy, free of soiled equipment and supplies, and properly stocked.
  • Transports patients to and from and within the facility.

Assists with preoperative patient preparation and postoperative patient discharge (e.g. changing clothes, providing nourishment).

  • Assists with OR turnover and preparation of sterile supplies (e.g. opening, case pulling).
  • Cleans and restocks anesthesia supplies as assigned.
  • With additional training, may assist the surgical team as a second scrub person.
  • Follow decontamination and sterilization per manufacturer instructions and facility policies and procedures.
  • Maintains cleaning and sterilization logs per facility policy.

  • Listens respectfully, gives feedback directly, honestly and talks with others to clarify differences.
  • Effectively communicates and interacts with patients (using translation services when needed), their family, and other external and internal clients (including fellow employees) from diverse backgrounds.
