Job summary

YMCA of Central New York is seeking an Arts Visual Assistant to support the Arts Studio under the direction of the Arts Studio Director and instructors. The role demands strong organization, communication, and teamwork to ensure a safe, engaging environment for children.

The position is part-time and requires helping with studio setup, guiding students, reinforcing positive behaviors, and coordinating transitions while maintaining documentation and collaboration with the studio team.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Arts Instructor with setting up the studio prior to the start of class; maintain cleanliness and organization of the Arts Studio.
• Observe directions given to students and help individuals stay on track with instructions.
• Reinforce positive behaviors and creative progress.
• Escort children to restrooms and to other rooms as needed; supervise transitions.
• Assist in washing students' hands and maintain safety protocols.
• Follow guidelines in the Arts Studio Orientation Packet and site procedures.
• Maintain required paperwork for the Arts Studio Director.
• Sustain open communication between Arts Instructor and Arts Studio Director.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Arts Studio Director and Instructors.

Position Summary:

T his position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization. Under the direction of the Arts Studio Director and the Arts Instructors, the Arts Visual Assistant is a team player who demonstrates strong skills in organization; interpersonal, verbal and written communication; and collaborative relationships. The Arts Visual Assistant provides leadership and assures the well-being for all, in line with YMCA of the USA guidelines and Association policies.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary Range: $15.50/hour, Part-time non-exempt

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

• Assist the Arts Instructor with setting up the studio prior to the start of class; help maintain the cleanliness and organization of the Arts Studio.
• Watch the directions being given to students and help students individually to stay on track with directions.
• Reinforce positive behaviors and creative strides.
• Escort children to the restrooms (at least 2 children each trip) and escort children to and from the Prime Time room.
• Assist in washing students' hands at the end of class.
• Handle disruptive behaviors in accordance with the Arts Studio Orientation Packet.
• Follow all guidelines and procedures stated in the Arts Studio Orientation Packet.
• Maintain required paperwork for the Arts Studio Director.
• Sustain open communication between the Arts Instructor and the Arts Studio Director.
• All other duties as assigned by the Arts Studio Director of the Arts Instructors.

Experience, Education & Qualifications:

• High School Diploma.
• Experience working and monitoring children of different age groups.
• Possess and demonstrate excellent organizational, verbal and written communication, interpersonal, decision-making, problem solving and leadership skills.
• Possess and demonstrates ability to work within a team.
• Experience working with children.

Trainings and Certifications:

• Must complete online Bloodborne Pathogens, Employee Safety and Youth Protection Series trainings prior to initial assignment to position.
• Must complete online Hazard Communication training within the first 90-days of employment.
• Must attend and complete Listen First within 90-days of employment.
• Must attend all other required trainings and workshops.
• Program/Project Management: Ensures program or project goals are met and intended impact occurs.

Physical Demands:

Ability to frequently stand, sit, walk, talk, hear, kneel, bend, reach, balance, crouch, climb and/or balance, reach with hands and arms, handle or feel, stoop, climb a minimum of two flights of stairs (approximately every ½ hour), lift/move and carry approximately 30 pounds, and use hands and fingers. Special vision abilities required close, color, distance, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Occasionally exposed to dusty environment, face masks are supplied for pouring dry glazes, plaster, and any other materials that contain airborne particles. Noise level is moderate.
