Houston Methodist’s Artist-Center for Performing Arts Medicine (CPAM) seeks a pianist to illuminate public spaces with performances that support healing and reduce anxiety. The role requires presenting culturally diverse and traditional genres while coordinating with Security, Spiritual Care, and Guest Services as needed.

The artist will perform in hospital venues across the Houston Methodist system, maintaining professional boundaries and adapting to feedback, space, and acoustic constraints.

Qualifications

  • Professional artist with five years of experience.
  • Audition/interview will be required.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English for safety-critical functions.
  • Ability to communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers with customer service focus.

Responsibilities

  • Exhibits sensitivity to surroundings and approachability to listeners/viewers.
  • Responds positively to requests for assistance from customers, employees and visitors, using clear and professional communication.
  • Mentors or trains volunteer or staff Resident Artists as requested.
  • Provides art as a service to promote the holistic environment of care at Houston Methodist.
  • Performs or creates in a wide variety of classical, cultural, popular and traditional genres to meet the goals of the position.
  • Performs or creates for hospital events, as determined by the schedule with management.
  • Performs or creates while taking a 15 minute break every hour.

At Houston Methodist, the Artist-Center for Performing Arts Medicine (CPAM) position is responsible for creating a welcoming, holistic, motivating and inspiring environment of care for our patients, guests and employees by creating or performing in classical, cultural, popular and traditional genres appropriate for the healing environment. This position creates/performs with a high degree of professional proficiency in public areas throughout the Houston Methodist system. The Artist-CPAM position's work is purposely aimed to relieve anxiety and offer rejuvenation while creating a welcoming environment of solace that supports the journey of healing and caregiving for all. This position remains conscientious of the environment and modifies selections/choices and volume with regards to audience feedback, activity in the space, safety precautions, environmental disruptions or acoustic constraints. The Artist-CPAM's position maintains professional boundaries and connects individuals with other departments like Security, Spiritual Care, and Guest Services when the need arises.


This role will be helping to support our CPAM department as a pianist and would be the preferred discipline.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION


  • High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)


EXPERIENCE


  • Professional artist with five years of experience

  • An audition/interview will be required

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations

  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security

  • Contributes to a safe working environment with respect to sound levels, equipment and overhead announcements.

  • Acts accordingly, displaying sensitivity to the needs of doctors, nurses or chaplains when discussions are taking place with patients and families within close proximity.

  • Use resources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritizes department daily tasks, minimizing incidental overtime.
