Job summary

Portland Community College is seeking a full-time IST II to support the Art program at Rock Creek Campus. The role involves maintaining ceramics facilities, assisting students, and coordinating casual staff in a collaborative learning environment.

Responsibilities include kiln operation, glaze work, inventory management, and safety compliance, with evening/weekend hours as needed. The position emphasizes equity and inclusive teaching within a diverse student body.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of post-secondary education in a specific technical discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Two years of experience supporting studio art activities in the technical area.
  • Proven communications skills to assist students and lead others.

Responsibilities

  • Design, construct, maintain, and troubleshoot ceramics studio equipment and facilities.
  • Coordinate and support daily operations of the ceramics studio.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot electric and gas kilns, wheels, slab rollers, pug mills, and related studio equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and upkeep of ceramics equipment.
  • Manage ceramics materials, inventory, and glaze materials; develop glaze formulations.
  • Provide technical assistance to students during open studio hours and supervise workspace safety.
  • Provide work direction to student employees and casual staff; coordinate schedules.
  • Orient new faculty and staff to studio procedures, equipment, and safety.
  • Order departmental supplies and track expenditures; maintain inventory records.
  • Maintain records of studio operations, safety, and SDS; ensure compliance with safety protocols.
  • Handle hazardous materials following DEQ protocols; ensure studio cleanliness and security.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
