Job summary

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's NRCS New Jersey State Office seeks an area engineer to lead engineering projects in soil and water conservation, flood protection, and watershed programs.

You will supervise design, inspections, and execution of complex practices, while guiding staff and ensuring compliance with standards and agency policies. Responsibilities include coordinating surveys, preparing drawings and specifications, and delivering technical leadership and training across the state.

Qualifications

• US citizen or national status as required for federal employment.
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program or equivalent.
• Experience leading engineering planning, design, installation, and maintenance projects in soil and water conservation.

Responsibilities

• Directs engineering planning, design, and construction of soil and water conservation programs.
• Supervises field investigations, surveys, and the preparation of drawings and specs.
• Provides technical guidance and training to staff on engineering practices and equipment use.
• Ensures compliance with standards, policies, and safety requirements on project sites.
