Job summary

Our mission is to protect the integrity of New Mexico's livestock industry. Our team of about sixty full time inspectors and another sixty full and part time deputies continuously patrol and perform inspections around our state to help keep our livestock free from disease and safe from theft. We are also the office of the State Veterinarian, whose team collaborates with various government and private sector partners to ensure that our state remains free of diseases.

This position will be based out of the Northwest quadrant of the state.

Why does the job exist?

This position is responsible for ensuring inspectors have the necessary training, equipment and resources to protect New Mexico's livestock from loss, theft, injury and disease in accordance with Chapter 77 and 21.30 NMAC.

This position requires NM Law Enforcement Certification at hire.

How does it get done?

Provide direction and assistance to full-time Brand and Certified Inspectors. This includes utilizing available resources to ensure inspectors are providing the statutorily mandated services to the industry.
Provide daily supervision by ensuring work loads are being met and distributed properly, acting upon leave requests, approving schedules, conducting performance reviews and evaluations, and coaching and mentoring inspectors. This also includes training personnel in all aspects of the agency and duties, participating in the interviewing and selection of applicants, discipline, and assigning work load;
Prepare monthly reports and maintain records of activities within districts served;
Work with state and federal regulatory agencies and other NMLB staff in conducting investigations involving health violations, health inspections, quarantines, and health data;
Assist in the inspection of livestock;
Coordinate patrols, investigations and complex inspections in districts supervised.

This position will serve the industry and inspectors in Area 3.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have some supervisory experience, experience performing the duties of a livestock inspector and law enforcement experience. The ideal candidate will have current certification as a commissioned Law Enforcement Officer issued by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy and will have experience as a livestock inspector with the NMLB .

Associate's degree in Agriculture or Animal Husbandry, Criminology, Criminal/Political Science, or related degree allowable by agency at time of posting and five (5) years of livestock, agriculture, law enforcement related experience, and/or direct experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Current certification as a commissioned Law Enforcement Officer issued by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy is required.

Employment Requirements

Completion of the hiring process is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment screening process. This position is designated as safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.

Working Conditions

This position requires working with and around livestock, supervising a group of livestock inspectors, training inspectors in conducting inspections/conducting investigations, road stops and issuing citations. The duties involve frequent standing, bending, lifting, sitting and driving a state vehicle. Work is performed outdoors in inclement weather, dangerous situations, with heavy lifting of 50 or more pounds. Erratic seasonal hours. Schedule may require weekend and holiday work.
