Job description

The Design School in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at ASU invites applications for part-time Architecture Faculty Associate appointments for Fall 2026 and/or Spring 2027 to teach undergraduate and/or graduate core architecture studios and architecture technology courses on the Tempe campus (in-person) and/or online (via an asynchronous modality).

Specializations or required skills may include: the ability to teach architectural design methodologies and core design principles, spatial literacy, fundamental drawing/modeling techniques, and systems and site integration. Specializations may also include: environmental and/or structural architectural technology, building science, and envelope modeling. Areas of focus may encompass climate, site, and solar analyses; passive heating, cooling, and daylighting strategies; and the architectural design implications of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

The successful candidate(s) will teach in-person or online courses, prepare course materials, evaluate student work, and assist students. Faculty Associates positions are one semester, non-benefits eligible, fixed-term appointments with no tenure implications, not to exceed .40 FTE.

The number of courses is contingent upon needs, funding and sufficient enrollment. Salary is based upon qualifications and assigned teaching load. Individuals employed as Faculty Associates may not hold multiple, non-benefits-eligible appointments at Arizona State University.

Faculty Associate assignments are paid $1,500-$2,000 per credit hour, depending on the component, over the length of the session.

Anticipated start date is: Fall 2026, Spring 2027 Session A, B, or C

Essential Duties
  • Prepare and deliver high quality studio content, including design lectures, visual/software technique demonstrations, collaborative exercises, and other teaching activities in acoordance with the approved syllabus and academic standards.
  • Conduct design critiques both in-person and/or via virtual asynchronous learning environments to provide continuous feedback on student project development.
  • Organize, facilitate, and participate in formal design reviews, pinups, and final juries, coordinating external guest reviewers in physical and/or digital environments.
  • Evaluate student portfolio submissions, design projects, and iterative process work, providing timely, constructive feedback.
  • Assist students through physical or online office hours or online platforms/discussion forums.
  • Support studio administration as needed (e.g., electronic syllabus preparation, coordination with vertical studio coordinators, and maintaining accurate, secure course records via the Canvas Learning Management System).
  • Teach in one or more of the following modalities: in-person (Tempe campus) or online asynchronous.
Working Environment

The successful candidate(s) will teach in-person or online courses:

For on-campus instruction: Activities are performed in an architecture studio and classroom setting subject to extended periods of standing, lecturing, and facilitating hands‑on learning activities. Frequently required to stand for varying lengths of time, sketch/draft, and walk moderate distances to perform desk critiques. Occasional bending, reaching, and lifting up to 25 pounds.

For online instruction: Activities are performed in a remote or home office environment requiring extended periods of sitting, typing, digital drawing/modeling, and navigating an online learning workspace. Requires the operational capability to clearly communicate complex spatial, formal, and visual design concepts both in‑person and/or via university‑approved digital platforms. Regular use of office and studio technology, including computer workstations, digital projectors, webcams, microphones, and design/rendering software.
