Job summary

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) seeks Arboriculturist specialists in the Right of Way Maintenance and Urban Forestry division to support arboricultural field inspection services for tree work related to SDOT permits, planting, care and maintenance, including root protection, soil restoration, mulching, watering, and pruning.

Responsibilities include inspecting work to ensure permit compliance, updating the SDOT tree inventory, and contributing to a canopy-friendly, safe urban

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Forestry, Natural Resources, Botany, or related field.
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience in the care, planting and maintenance of trees and plant materials with supervision or lead work.
• Valid Washington State driver's license; ISA Arborist credentials and related certifications are favorable.

Responsibilities

• Attend pre-construction meetings and review tree protection plans; monitor tree protection and evaluate root systems.
• Oversee root pruning; recommend measures to lessen construction impacts on trees; assess pruning needs for equipment access.
• Update tree inventory; post notices; respond to inquiries about tree removal, retention, and protection.
• Ensure permit plans protect public safety and grow Seattle's tree canopy; document changes in inventory.
