Job summary

University of Oklahoma is seeking a lead for the tree crew to supervise care, safety, and maintenance across campus. The role drives pruning, removals, storm response, and sustainability initiatives while guiding the team in landscape construction and plant propagation.

The position oversees operations, ensures safety, and supports the propagation of plant materials. 3+ years in landscaping or arboriculture and a valid driver’s license are required.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of experience in landscaping, arboriculture, or grounds maintenance.
• Degree preferred: Bachelor’s in Forestry or Horticulture; pesticide licensing may be required.

Responsibilities

• Organizes, coordinates and directs landscape crews to meet department goals.
• Coordinates safe application of fertilizers and pesticides.
• Directs safe use of equipment, including heavy machinery.
• Assists in design and layout of floral beds and plant materials.
• Coordinates work with other Facilities Management landscape crews.
• Prepares time cards and routine reports.
• Selects, trains and evaluates personnel; makes salary recommendations.
• Manages requisitions to stock and maintain inventory.
• Ensures safety and proper operation of gardening equipment.
• Performs other duties as needed.

Position Introduction

Performs technical and semi-technical duties required in the propagation of plant materials.

Responsibilities

• Organizes, coordinates and directs landscape crews. Performs necessary tasks to accomplish the goals set forth by the Landscape Department.
• Coordinates the application of fertilizers and pesticides in a safe and proper manner.
• Directs and supervises the safe and proper use of equipment and materials, including heavy equipment.
• Assists in the design and layout of floral and plant beds, and the selection of appropriate materials, plants, and flowers.
• Coordinates and directs the work of other Facilities Management crews working on landscape projects.
• Prepares and approves employee time cards and prepares routine reports.
• Selects and trains personnel, evaluates performance, and makes salary recommendations.
• Processes requisitions to stock and maintain supply inventory.
• Ensures safety of all personnel and proper operation and security of gardening equipment.
• Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Required Education and Experience

• 3 years of experience in landscaping, arboriculture (tree care), or grounds maintenance.

Required Certifications And Licenses

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
• ISA Certified Arborist certification may be required depending on location or assignment.

Department Preferences

• Bachelor's of Science in Forestry or Horticulture or Related Field.
• Oklahoma pesticide license.
