Job summary

HHMI's Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA, is seeking Aquatics Technicians to provide standard animal husbandry and technical support in the Aquatics department. The position focuses on the highest standards of care for larval zebrafish and Danionella, with a 3-month temporary appointment that could extend based on business needs.

Candidates will work rotating weekends as part of regular responsibilities, join a collaborative team, and contribute to a growing vivarium program supporting

Qualifications

• College degree in life science or a related field preferred.
• Six months of experience working with vertebrate animal species.
• Experience in a basic or applied science research setting preferred.
• Ability to identify changes in an animal's behavior or health and provide basic prescribed treatments.
• Excellent skills in Microsoft Office and/or Google Docs.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to deal effectively with researchers and staff.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, rapidly changing environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform animal husbandry and care support for aquatic species (feed, clean tanks, observe animals, and maintain water systems).
• Clean and sanitize animal holding or procedure rooms.
• Provide environmental enrichment appropriate to the species housed.
• Provide minor technical support (e.g., crossings, fin clips, injections, treatments) as directed.
• Set up breeding units of zebrafish and Danionella as directed.
• Use databases for animal recordkeeping and study support.
• Assist with receiving, stocking, and maintenance of supply inventories.
• Maintain and record data for duties completed.
