Job summary

YMCA of Greenwich is seeking an Aquatics Program & Training Manager to oversee the aquatic programs, pool schedules, certifications, and swim lessons. You will manage daily operations, ensure safety, supervise staff, and steward budgets in support of our mission.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Youth & Family Engagement, you will expand non-competitive programs, coordinate with Pool Operations & Training, and partner with marketing to raise awareness and participation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum two years of experience in personnel supervision, recruitment, training, and development of staff and volunteers.
  • Current YMCA or Red Cross certifications in First Aid, CPR /AED and Lifeguard/Swim Instructor required.
  • Ability to prepare, monitor and control budgets.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Excellent organizational and written/oral skills; strong collaborative work ethic.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain current certifications and stay updated on safety standards.

  • Evaluate programs via enrollment, feedback, and financial performance for quality and impact.
  • Develop and monitor program budgets to meet financial goals while maintaining quality.
  • Recruit, hire, onboard, train, and supervise Swim School staff and volunteers.
  • Foster a positive team culture with coaching and development.
  • Ensure staff certifications and documentation remain current and compliant.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Aquatics Program & Training Manager, under the direction of the Senior Director of Youth & Family Engagement, is responsible for the management and operation of the YMCA of Greenwich’s aquatic programs, pool schedules, Red Cross Certifications, and YMCA swim lessons. This includes but is not limited to: overall daily program operations, safety, supervision, scheduling of both Olympic and Alumni Pool, management and development of high quality non-competitive aquatic programs and swim lessons, staff management, and annual budget, equipment, and community/staff relations.

Director of Aquatic Programs & Development

PAY

$50,000 - $60,000/annual

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Develop, manage and expand all non-competitive aquatic programs and services that meet the needs of the community, including: Swim School; Adult Learn-to-Swim, Adaptive swim, Family Aquatics, Swim School scholarships, and the pipeline to competitive aquatics.
  • Lead the growth and implementation of community outreach initiatives, including Safety Around Water (SAW), to increase water safety education and access throughout the community.
  • Maintain current certifications as a YMCA Swim Instructor/Trainer and Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED Instructor, and stay current on industry best practices and aquatic safety standards.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Pool Operations & Training to develop, manage, and communicate pool schedules, ensuring efficient use of facilities for lessons, programs, practices, and special events.
  • Evaluate all non-competitive aquatic programs through enrollment trends, participant feedback, financial performance, and program outcomes to ensure quality, effectiveness, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor program budgets to achieve financial goals while maintaining high quality programming.
  • Works closely with Pool Operations Director in creating, managing, and communicating pool schedules for Olympic and Alumni pools.
  • Expand Swim School, Adaptive Aquatics, Family Aquatics, and Safety Around Water programs in alignment with the YMCA’s strategic plan and mission.
  • Recruit, hire, onboard, train, supervise, schedule, develop, and evaluate Swim School staff and volunteers.
  • Foster a positive team culture while providing coaching, accountability, and ongoing professional development.
  • Ensure all staff certifications, and required documentation remain current, accurate, and compliant with YMCA and regulatory standards.
  • Provide swim instruction and program coverage as needed to ensure consistent, high quality member service.
  • Ensure compliance with all YMCA policies, procedures, safety standards, and risk management practices.
  • Attend required safety and professional development trainings.
  • Build authentic relationships with members, participants, families, staff, volunteers, and community partners that strengthen engagement and support the YMCA's mission.
  • Maintain clear, timely, and effective communication with members, aquatics staff, and other YMCA departments regarding programs, schedules, policies, and operational updates.
  • Plan, facilitate, and lead regular non-competitive aquatic program staff meetings.
  • Partner with the Marketing Manager to develop promotional campaigns, advertising, public relations initiatives, and website and brochure content that increase awareness and participation in non-competitive aquatic programs.
  • Pursue ongoing professional development to enhance knowledge of aquatic programming, water safety, leadership, and member engagement.
  • Attend professional staff meetings and actively participate in organizational initiatives and cross-department collaboration.
  • Perform other duties as designated by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum two years of experience in personnel supervision, recruitment, training, and development of staff and volunteers, preferably in aquatics.
  • Current YMCA or Red Cross certifications in First Aid, CPR /AED and Lifeguard/Swim Instructor required.
  • Ability to prepare, monitor and control budgets.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Must be able to supervise, direct, and guide all aquatics programs with knowledge of the association’s short and long term goals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, volunteers, members, and the general public is essential.
  • Good organizational and written/oral skills necessary.
  • Must have strong collaborative work ethic.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.
