Job summary

The YMCA of the East Bay is seeking an Aquatics Coordinator to assist in supervising and implementing group and private swim lessons, lifeguard coverage, and daily pool operations at our Berkeley location.

Under supervision of the Aquatics Director, you will coordinate schedules, train staff, ensure safety and compliance, and engage with members to deliver high-quality aquatic programs for all ages.

POSITION SUMMARY:

These general functions will be carried out in keeping with the Goals, Policies and Mission of the YMCA of the East Bay. Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Director and/or the Sr. Aquatics Director, the Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for assisting in the supervision and implementation of the group and private swim lesson programs, the management of daily operations,

Essential Functions

• Assist in oversight of group and private swim lesson program including scheduling, informing staff of schedules, and communicating with members. Supervise in the absence of the Aquatic Director.
• Assist in supervision of group swim lesson program, swim instructors, lifeguards, aquatic volunteers, and pool areas as directed
• Provide youth and adult group and private swim instruction as well as lifeguard coverage on a regularly scheduled basis and/or for emergency coverage
• Provide quality water fitness instruction on a regularly scheduled basis and/or for emergency coverage.
• Effectively resolve member and participant questions and complaints
• Maintain registration process as well as class input into YMCA registration database
• Maintain up-to-date and proper records, schedules and rosters for swim instruction program
• Assist in the development and implementation of special events and new programs that meet the needs of our community
• Attend staff meetings and required trainings as directed by supervisors
• Maintain effective communication with members, staff, and supervisors
• Build positive relationships with staff and members
• Ensure all pool rules, regulations, standards of conduct, and staff performance agreements are followed
• Maintain safety at all times; prevent injuries and eliminate hazardous situations; respond to all emergency situations
• Participate in any Aquatic Department or Branch events, including the Annual Giving Campaign
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Physically perform all skills required of an Aquatics Coordinator. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions
• Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness
• Able to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Ability to understand and respond in English
• Able to lift and move up to 30 pounds

Qualifications

• Associates Degree in related field or equivalent
• Certifications: Lifeguarding OR CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Basic First Aid certification
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards
• YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent (American Red Cross, Star Fish, or teaching experience)
• Ability to teach water fitness classes (or willing to become an instructor upon hire)
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and other computer programs necessary to perform the duties of the job
