Job summary

The Farmington Family YMCA, part of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, is hiring lifeguards to maintain safe swimming conditions and promote member safety. The role supports a positive, family-friendly environment and offers certification opportunities.

Qualifications

• High school education (16+ years of age) required.
• 1 year lifeguard experience preferred.
• Current American Red Cross Lifeguard license preferred (we offer certification).
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid, AED, and Emergency Oxygen training.

Responsibilities

• Maintains active surveillance of the pool area using the effective 10/20 scanning strategy.
• Responds to emergencies and reports per YMCA and American Red Cross policies.
• Performs and documents equipment and chemical checks using proper protocol.
• Attends all staff meetings, required training and certification courses, and monthly in-service trainings.
• Performs other duties as directed by the supervisor.

General Function

The lifeguard is responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions under Y policies and safety rules, while creating a safe and positive atmosphere for promotion of YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit member safety and engagement.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications

At a minimum, some high school level education (over 16+ years of age)

1 year of experience is preferred, but not required

Current American Red Cross Lifeguard license is preferred, but not required (we offer certification)

CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid, AED, and Emergency Oxygen

• Responds to emergencies and relays reports in accordance with YMCA and The American Red Cross policies and guidelines

• Performs other assigned duties as directed by the supervisor.

• Ability to hear and observe distress signals in the water and anywhere in the zone of responsibility
