Job summary

The City of Charlotte’s Water Department is seeking an apprentice to become a Utility Technician through a structured one-year program. It combines on-the-job training with classroom work to develop skills in the distribution and wastewater collection systems.

Upon completion, the apprentice will perform skilled tasks in construction, maintenance, and repair under supervision, with hands-on training across various shifts and environments to serve the community effectively.

Qualifications

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License is required.
  • Must obtain City Drivers Permit.
  • Must obtain Class A CDL permit within 6 months and tanker endorsement within 1 year.

Responsibilities

  • Performs manual and semi-skilled tasks related to construction, repair and maintenance.
  • Locates utilities on the job and digs out utilities manually or by machine.
  • Interprets meter readings and performs routine safety inspections.
  • Transports materials and equipment to job sites and sets up traffic control devices.
  • Operates locators and tools including hydrants, air compressors, generators.
  • Maintains vehicles and clean, safe work areas.
  • Performs related work as required.
