KIPP Capital Region seeks an Apprentice Teacher to work under a Lead Teacher in Albany and Troy, NY, serving as a full staff member and partner in their school for the academic year.

Position Overview

The Apprentice Teacher will receive close mentorship under a Lead Teacher, serve as a full staff member and thought partner in their respective school, and take on progressive teaching responsibilities over the academic year.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Supports Lead Teachers with tutoring, grading, and individual or small group student instruction.
• Observes Lead Teachers to improve instructional techniques and classroom management.
• Provides appropriate supervision of students during class, breaks, meals, and transitions to maintain an optimal work environment and to ensure students' safety and well-being in partnership with the Lead Teacher.
• Assist with various work inside and outside the classroom, including supporting the main office team, teaching and helping coordinate Enrichment classes, organizing student events, and developing mentoring learning partnerships with students.
• Attending and participating in events outside regular school hours (e.g., family nights, student performances, prom, field trips, report card nights, Teacher-Parent Conferences, June, and August Family Saturday Orientations, etc.).
• In collaboration with the grade level team, plan and execute a rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum that assesses students' progress.
• Periodically plan and deliver instruction, gradually taking on more responsibility throughout the year.
• Provide students daily feedback on mastery performance in character and academics and plan for individual learning needs in partnership with the Lead Teacher.
• In collaboration with the grade level team, plan and execute a rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum that assesses students' progress.
• Support students by providing one-on-one and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support with the potential of teaching small groups of students in partnership with the Lead Teacher.
• Meet regularly with a coach and school leadership to implement feedback on lessons and instruction.
• Provide the Lead Teacher with support in instruction, assessments, grading, and other classroom responsibilities.
• Assist the Lead Teacher with problem solving and making timely determinations with classroom issues in a solution-focused manner.
• Establish, cultivate, and maintain a collaborative relationship with the Lead Teacher.
• Responsible for managing and reducing risk within the classroom and seeking assistance to resolve the matter.
• Serve as an advisor to a small group of students.
• Aid to co-lead advisory/homeroom in the morning and afternoon.
• Supervise students during transitions, breakfast, lunch, and after school.
• Accountable, along with the Lead Teacher, for student's mastery of academic standards.
• Support the collection of data to inform instructional decisions.
• Perform clerical duties, as needed, that serve to advance student learning.
• Establish and maintain strong communication lines with all parents, share continuous progress, and be available for open houses, parent-teacher conferences, and other events involving parents in partnership with the Lead Teacher.
• Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
• Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
• As appropriate, perform all duties expected of classroom teachers in partnership with the Lead Teacher, including but not limited to:
  • Implementing curricula and activities to meet academic standards.
  • Designing and implementing assessments that measure progress toward academic standards.
  • Using assessment data to refine curriculum and inform instructional practices.
  • Participating in collaborative curriculum development, grade-level activities, school-wide functions, events, and trips.
  • Providing consistent rewards and consequences for student behavior.
  • Establish and maintain strong communication lines with all parents and share progress.
  • Be available for open houses, parent-teacher conferences, and other events involving parents.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited College or University, required.
• Valid NYS Teaching Licensure or willingness to pursue state certification, required.
• Experience as a school educator, preferably in a charter or public school environment.
• Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred
• Ability to work a flexible schedule outside of regular business hours.
• Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.

Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role and longevity within the KIPP network. KIPP Capital Region will evaluate and determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our teacher salary scale at point of hire.
