Job summary

Western States Equipment in Meridian, Idaho, seeks a Power Systems Technician with strong trouble-shooting skills for power systems engines and generators. You will diagnose, repair, and service equipment, write detailed service reports, mentor junior technicians, and coordinate with supervisors to ensure quality results.

In this safety-sensitive role, you’ll work hands-on with limited supervision, meet training requirements, and occasionally overtime.

Qualifications

  • Proof of high school diploma or GED.
  • Associate degree preferred or comparable work experience.
  • Four years minimum experience in power systems or heavy equipment in Caterpillar or similar environment.
  • Must be able to communicate in English.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots, inspects, and operates power systems with limited supervision.
  • Provides diagnosis to supervisor and helps achieve accurate estimates.
  • Writes service reports for repairs in detail and saves to server.
  • Mentors Power Systems Technicians I & II.
  • Directs others on a limited basis when supervisor is absent.
  • Handles customer inquiries professionally and adheres to safety policies.

Job description

Essential Functions
  • Troubleshoots, inspects, and operates power systems products with limited to no assistance. Asks for occasional assistance from Power Systems Field Technician in failure analysis and diagnosing problems for quality control.
  • Gives diagnosis to Power Systems Field Service Supervisor and works to achieve an accurate estimate.
  • Uses technician tools, including but not limited to: service manuals, operations manuals, SIS Web and STW effectively to address technical issues.
  • Uses SIS to accurately determine parts required for repair and communicates repair needs with Parts Consultant.
  • Advises and mentors Power Systems Technicians levels I and II with troubleshooting, diagnosing, and quality control.
  • Directs others on limited basis as required in the absence of Power Systems Field Service Supervisor.
  • Performs all required tasks in accordance with printed procedures.
  • Requests another Power Systems technician to conduct quality control review of repaired power systems products.
  • Writes service report for every power system repair in detail. Prints off hardcopy of service report with work orders and saves to server.
  • Assists other Power Systems Technicians on large repairs.
  • Handles all customer inquiries in a prompt and professional manner.
  • Adheres to all customer care standards.
  • Actively cares and advocates safety at Western States. Adheres to all applicable safety policies, procedures and standards.
  • May accomplish training and serve as a team member in support of Western States’ strategic programs, projects, and initiatives.
  • Work within and promote corporate vision, mission, and values of the organization.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent understanding of power systems products, including engines and generators.
  • Ability to remove, install, disassemble and assemble components without supervision.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems (ET, STW, Parts Integration, SIS Web, AX).
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Consistent attendance and timeliness.
  • Able to work overtime with little or no notice.
Education and Experience
  • Proof of high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Associate Degree from an accredited vocational school preferred or comparable work experience required.
  • Four years minimum experience in power systems or working on heavy equipment in a Caterpillar or similar environment with Industrial engine required.
  • Must be able to communicate (speak, read, comprehend, write in English).
Physical Characteristics
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time along with walking, sitting, repetitive climbing stairs, reaching (including but not limited to above-shoulder reaching), repetitive bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, leaning and twisting.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs in accordance with Western States’ Lifting Safe Work Practice to include amount and approach.
  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements for applicable safety policies.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures and environment.
  • Exposure to high noise level.
  • Exposure to fumes.
