Starting rate of $44.19, with wage progression based on apprenticeship level and successful advancement through the City's apprenticeship program. Current apprentice rates progress up to $65.95 upon successful completion of the 4-year (four-year) program.

Participates in the City of Aspen's 4-year (four-year) registered Electric Line Technician Apprenticeship Program and learns the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's electric distribution system through classroom instruction and supervised on-the-job training. Develops knowledge and skills necessary to become a journey-level line worker while progressing through structured apprenticeship requirements.
Performs journey-level electrical linework involving the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the City's electrical distribution system. Independently performs technical work on energized and de-energized systems, analyzes system issues, responds to service interruptions, and provides technical expertise in support of City electric operations. Serves as a resource to apprentices and other staff through training, mentoring, and guidance.
The City of Aspen's 4-year (four-year) Electric Line Worker Apprenticeship Program provides a unique opportunity to earn while you learn in a structured, state-registered apprenticeship. Apprentices receive a combination of hands‑on training, on‑the‑job learning, and related technical instruction designed to develop the skills needed to become a journey-level Line Worker. The program is approved and registered through the U.S. Department of Labor and the State of Colorado (Link to: Standards of Apprenticeship). The apprenticeship consists of approximately 7,000 hours of on‑the‑job training and 576 hours of related instruction over a four-year period. Apprentices progress through a seven‑step training program and receive wage increases as they successfully complete each step. As part of the program, the apprentice is required to attend full‑time Line Worker school in Colorado Springs (Trinidad State College), beginning in January 2027 and continuing through graduation in early May 2027. School attendance is typically Monday through Friday, approximately eight hours per day. The City pays required tuition and program‑related educational costs*; however, the apprentice is responsible for housing and other personal living expenses while attending full‑time Line Worker school. The Apprentice is a full‑time City of Aspen employee and is eligible for the City's comprehensive benefits package.
This position is intended for individuals with journey‑level training and experience who can independently perform electrical line work and support the safe and reliable delivery of electric service to the Aspen community.

Both positions must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook Email, and have a basic understanding of computers and online computer‑based technology applications, which includes accessing web‑based platforms. Must possess basic knowledge of National Electric Safety Code, OSHA rules and regulations. Must be able to effectively read and follow operations and safety manuals.
(*City‑Paid Initial CDL Training: The City will cover the cost of the first Commercial Colorado driver’s license‑CDL training course within the first six months of hire. If the employee does not pass the CDL exam after the first City‑paid course, any additional training or retesting costs will be the employee’s responsibility.)
NOTE: This position is required to comply with state, federal and local regulations concerning Drug and Alcohol Testing procedures applicable to holders of Commercial Driver’s License (CDLs) holders which includes but is not limited to: pre‑employment and random drug and alcohol testing and a completed, satisfactory previous employer reference form.
NOTE: This position requires a 5/6 panel drug test (to be completed at PROCOM – Glenwood Springs), a physical examination (at Grand River Health Clinic West – Parachute), and a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon passing a physical examination, a drug test and Criminal Background Check.

Apprentice Electric Line Technician or Electric Line Technician
The City pays the tuition and training costs associated with the required four‑month Lineworker school in Colorado Springs, as well as the training costs associated with the four‑year apprenticeship program. Apprentices are required to enter into a training repayment agreement. Upon successful completion of the four‑year apprenticeship program and attainment of journey‑level status as an Electric Line Technician, apprentices are expected to remain employed with the City for at least two (2) additional years. Apprentices who do not fulfill this commitment may be required to repay a portion of the City’s training investment. Additional details will be provided during the hiring process.
