Job summary

A utility provider is seeking Apprentices for an opportunity to develop skills in high and low voltage line work across multiple locations in Mississippi. This role involves training under supervision, performing essential tasks associated with electric transmission, and assisting experienced linemen. Ideal candidates will have a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and the ability to perform physical tasks. A program completion or demonstrated experience in line work is essential for applicants.

Qualifications

  • Must have 4+ years of linework experience for 4th Year Apprentice.
  • Must have 3+ years of linework experience for 3rd Year Apprentice.
  • Must have 2+ years of linework experience for 2nd Year Apprentice.
  • Completion of an accredited Lineworker Training program OR prior demonstrated linework experience required for 1st Year Apprentice.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution.
  • Use pole climbing equipment safely.
  • Install poles and assist qualified linemen.
  • Handle and install transformer installations.
  • Assist in trimming trees and maintaining street lighting fixtures.

Overview

Job Title: Apprentice

Work Place Flexibility: Onsite

This posting is for a potential future opening(s) with Entergy. This posting is to build a candidate pool, should the opening(s) become available.

Apprentice 1st Year

Under close supervision, as an apprentice in training, must be willing and able to perform the less difficult tasks and assist others in high and low voltage line work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures, underground systems, and related equipment, and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned.

  • Use pole climbing equipment and have ability to handle self on pole in safe and efficient manner.
  • Handle poles, install poles, assist in the erection of wood and steel structures, including foundations.
  • Make up and install guys and install secondaries.
  • Connect services on energized conductors up to 600 volts.
  • Install secondary racks and clevis, anchors, miscellaneous hardware, grounds, fittings for vertical type construction, buss supports, and conductors on dead circuits.
  • Perform simple transmission and distribution switching (qualified lineman assistance).
  • Tie knots and splice rope.
  • Assist in trimming trees.
  • Assist qualified lineman or mechanic in simple routine inspection and maintenance.
  • Assist in the installation of all types of conduit systems.
  • Assist in the handling, moving and installation of all transmission, distribution and plant equipment, machinery, etc.
  • Prepare reports and records.
  • Operate Company’s trucks and automobiles.
  • Obtain/Maintain a valid Class A CDL.
Apprentice 2nd Year

Under close supervision, must know, understand and be willing and able to apply all applicable company construction specifications in order to perform the less complicated tasks on high and low voltage line work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures and equipment, and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned.

  • Install crossarms, secondary racks and clevis, anchors and guys, and install hardware and fittings for vertical type construction, including conductors, single phase transformers, lightning arresters, grounds, cutouts, etc., on dead circuits.
  • Trim trees.
  • Under close supervision may be allowed to cover and work energized circuits when they and their supervisor are confident that this can be done safely.
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of street lighting equipment and fixtures.
  • Direct work of helpers and apprentices as required.
Apprentice 3rd Year

Under close and/or directive supervision, and following prescribed routine and instructions as to methods and working details of average difficulty and importance, must know, understand and be willing and able to apply all applicable company construction specifications in order to perform the less complicated tasks on high and low voltage line work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures and equipment, and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned.

  • Use hot line tools under close supervision of qualified workman.
  • Under close and/or directive supervision may be allowed to cover and work energized circuits when they and their supervisor are confident that this can be done safely.
  • Fuse transformers and sectionalizing fuses.
  • String, sag and tie in conductors on dead lines of all classes.
  • Install all types of transformer installations, make tap changes and install primary metering equipment under supervision of qualified workman.
  • Install, maintain, and repair street lighting equipment and fixtures.
  • Assist in making aerial and submarine cable installations, including the making of joints and installing potheads.
  • Assist in the installation of pole type regulators and transformers to boost or buck line voltage.
  • Assist in phasing and checking rotation in circuits direct and with potential transformers.
  • Assist in erecting and maintaining steel towers and outdoor substations.
  • Assist in receiving blocks.
  • Direct work of helpers, apprentices, and underclassmen as required.
Apprentice 4th Year

Under directive supervision, with limited latitude for planning or laying out of working details, must know, understand, and be willing and able to apply all applicable company construction specifications in order to perform high and low voltage line work involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission, underground and distribution dead or energized conductors, structures and equipment, and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned.

  • Use hot line tools.
  • Work on all types of conductors.
  • Install all types of transformer installations, make tap changes and install primary metering equipment.
  • Locate trouble and restore service on all classes of lines, substations, sectionalizing equipment, etc.
  • Make underground and submarine cable installations, including the making of joints and installation of potheads.
  • Install pole type regulators and transformers to boost or buck line voltage.
  • Phase and check rotation in circuits direct and with potential transformers.
  • Make field tests of distribution transformers.
  • Check for ground faults on circuits or equipment.
  • Erect and maintain steel towers and substations.
  • Direct work of assistants, instruct and train other employees.
Qualifications & Requirements

Physical Qualifications: Must be willing and able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Apprentice 4th Year: 4+ years demonstrated linework experience required.
  • Apprentice 3rd Year: 3+ years demonstrated linework experience required.
  • Apprentice 2nd Year: 2+ years demonstrated linework experience required.
  • Apprentice 1st Year: Completion of an accredited Lineworker Training program OR prior demonstrated linework experience required.
Other Requirements

As a condition of employment this position requires a pre-employment Fitness for Duty exam. This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and random drug testing.

Location & Travel: Primary locations include multiple sites in Mississippi (Madison, Brookhaven, Cleveland, Clinton, Jackson, Southaven, Vicksburg). Travel up to 25% may be required.
