Overview

The Hearing Care Provider Apprenticeship Program is designed for individuals who desire to become a hearing healthcare professional and provide complete hearing healthcare through patient assessment, education, and hearing loss treatment.

The Apprentice will complete the HearingLife Apprenticeship Program to gain the skills necessary to become a Hearing Care Provider and obtain the required state licenses. The program is comprised of virtual and in‑person classroom learning, hands‑on lab learning, and side‑by‑side learning with a licensed Hearing Care Provider. The Apprentice will follow the established curriculum and heed coaching provided by the assigned Preceptor. The training typically takes six months, but may take up to a year depending on state requirements.

Program Overview

• Training Permit: The Apprentice must obtain a training license for the state of study at the start of the program.
• HHA Clinical Introduction: Builds foundational clinical skills via instruction, live demonstrations, self‑guided labs, and Preceptor‑guided labs. A hands‑on Clinical Skills Check verifies skills.
• In‑Clinic Practice with Direct Supervision: Hands‑on work in the clinic under the Preceptor until the Apprentice passes the HearingLife Clinical Certification. The Apprentice Learning Plan guides skill development.
• Monthly Skills Development Measure: Tracks clinical skill development.
• Weekly Clinical Hour Log: A minimum of 18 hours is required each week.
• Weekly Summary of Learning and Clinical Experiences.
• Periodic meetings with the Clinical Training Team ensure continued progress.
• Distance Learning Program/Virtual Courses: 12‑week coursework covering core concepts with exams to validate learning. Additional virtual courses support mastery in preparation for clinical practice and licensing exams.
• Clinical Certification: Mastery of all clinical concepts is verified; upon passing, the Apprentice may see patients independently per state licensing laws.
• Licensing and Exams: After Clinical Certification, the Apprentice may take state or national licensing exams. Each exam may be attempted twice. Transition to a permanent provider depends on obtaining necessary licenses.
• Practical Exam: Hands‑on evaluation of clinical skills (not required in all states).
• Written Exam and ILE: Most states take the ILE; certain states use independent exams.
• Hearing Health Academy: Series of classes on business principles; upon completion and licensure, each provider partners with their People Leader and enrolls in the ATRT Academy within 60 days.

Responsibilities

• Exhibit friendly and courteous behavior in all customer interactions, building rapport and relationships with patients.
• Maintain schedule and regular touch points with patients.
• Manage active scheduling to prioritize actions and timelines, consistently meeting role expectations.
• Conduct Tympanometry and Otoscopic examinations (within scope).
• Perform pure‑tone air and bone conduction tests with and without masking.
• Conduct speech recognition threshold and word recognition tests with and without masking.
• Make personalized amplification recommendations based on patient needs.
• Perform custom ear mold impressions.
• Handle fitting and dispensing of hearing instruments.
• Provide follow‑up care for amplification including adjustments, troubleshooting, and repairs.
• Provide counseling on hearing loss for a positive patient experience.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Management.
