Job summary

Amazon’s AWS Neuron Science team is seeking an Applied Scientist to advance our software stack for Trainium and Inferentia accelerators. You will work with customers to identify adoption barriers and optimization opportunities, collaborating closely with engineering teams to implement innovative ML solutions.

The role engages with academia and research communities to push state-of-the-art machine-learning systems while contributing to a strategic growth area within AWS.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to AI for systems and ML compiler initiatives on kernel and code generation and optimization.
  • Develop and apply ML approaches for acceleration and compiler optimization.
  • Support system robustness through validation and testing of ML workloads.
  • Collaborate with external customers and engineering teams to deliver scalable ML solutions.

Applied Scientist, AWS Neuron Science team

The AWS Neuron Science Team is looking for talented scientists to enhance our software stack, accelerating customer adoption of Trainium and Inferentia accelerators. In this role, you will work directly with external and internal customers to identify key adoption barriers and optimization opportunities. You'll collaborate closely with our engineering teams to implement innovative solutions and engage with academic and research communities to advance state‑of‑the‑art machine‑learning systems. As part of a strategic growth area for AWS, you'll work alongside distinguished engineers and scientists in an exciting and impactful environment.

Key Areas of Focus
  • AI for Systems: developing and applying machine‑learning and reinforcement‑learning approaches for kernel and code generation and optimization
  • Machine‑Learning Compiler: creating advanced compiler techniques for machine‑learning workloads
  • System Robustness: building tools for accuracy and reliability validation
  • Efficient Kernel Development: designing high‑performance kernels optimized for our machine‑learning accelerator architectures
About the team

AWS Neuron is the software stack for the Trainium and Inferentia AWS Machine‑Learning chips. Inferentia delivers best‑in‑class inference performance at the lowest cost in the cloud to our customers. Trainium delivers best‑in‑class training performance at the lowest training cost. Neuron is a software that includes an ML compiler and native integration into popular ML frameworks. Our products are being used at scale with external customers such as Anthropic and Databricks as well as internal customers such as Alexa, Amazon Bedrocks, Amazon Robotics, Amazon Ads, and Amazon Rekognition.

Basic Qualifications
  • PhD or Master’s degree and at least 4 years of experience in computer science, electrical engineering, machine learning, or a related field
  • Experience with patents or publications at top‑tier peer‑reviewed conferences or journals
  • Proficiency in Java, C++, Python, or related programming languages
  • Experience in algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel or distributed computing, or high‑performance computing
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building machine‑learning models or developing algorithms for business applications
  • Professional software‑development experience

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this position is $171,600.00 – $222,200.00 USD annually. Your Amazon package will include sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location. Amazon also offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription), Basic Life & AD&D insurance, Supplemental life plans, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), Mental Health Support, Medical Advice Line, Flexible Spending Accounts, and adoption and surrogacy reimbursement coverage; 401(k) matching, paid time off, and parental leave.
