Job summary

Waukesha County Technical College seeks an Applied AI Lab Specialist to lead AI projects for industry partners and to design, scope, and prototype AI workflows and automation. You will deliver customized AI training and consult on the responsible adoption of AI in client environments.

The role supports lab operations and industry research, mentoring AI Fellows, and keeps current on AI tools and practices to inform project work.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field and 3+ years in applied AI or ML.
• Experience in consulting, workforce development, or public sector environments preferred.
• Ability to translate business problems into technical AI solutions.

The Applied AI Lab Specialist plays a key role in delivering artificial intelligence services that support both workforce development and business innovation. This position works directly with industry partners to design, scope, and execute AI-related projects, while also supporting training, consulting, and learning initiatives within the lab. The Applied AI Lab Specialist serves as a bridge between technical concepts and real-world application—helping organizations understand, evaluate, and responsibly adopt AI solutions that align with their operational goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Scope, plan, and lead applied AI projects for business and industry clients, including AI readiness assessments, use case identification, and proof-of-concept development.


• Design and prototype AI-powered workflows, integrations, and automation solutions aligned with client operational goals.


• Develop and deliver customized AI training and consultation services for external partners.


• Develop technical documentation including implementation guides, architecture summaries, and project deliverables.


• Operationalize AI solutions into lab workflows in collaboration with the Applied AI Lab Operations Manager.


• Provide day-to-day mentorship, task coordination, and work product review for AI Fellows.


• Support lab activities, demonstrations, and industry research initiatives.


• Maintain current knowledge of emerging AI tools, frameworks, and responsible use practices.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Working knowledge of machine learning, generative AI, large language models, and agentic systems including practical experience with AI development frameworks and APIs.


• Proficiency in Python and demonstrated ability to build and deploy applied AI solutions.


• Skill in managing client-facing technical projects with defined deliverables and timelines.


• Ability to translate organizational problems into technical solutions and communicate AI concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.


• Ability to provide oversight, guidance, and feedback to junior technical staff or fellows.


• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, information systems, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.


• Minimum three (3) years of professional experience in applied AI, machine learning, or a closely related technical field.


• Experience in consulting, professional services, or workforce development preferred.


• Experience in higher education or public sector environments preferred.

The Applied AI Lab Specialist role supports the AI Lab and available to start immediately.

Position Details

This is a casual position, part-time, 15-19 hours per week - not benefit eligible.
