Job summary

BorgWarner is seeking an Applications Engineer – Mechanical to lead a product development team for 4WD/AWD mechanical hardware. You will guide design, validation, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration from proposal through prototype and production, including DFMEA and root cause investigations.

The role requires a BS in Engineering, 4+ years (8+ preferred) in related engineering disciplines, and strong GD&T, CAD, and O365 skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering required; Mechanical preferred.
• 4+ years engineering experience; 8+ preferred.
• Experience in powertrain, driveline, 4WD/AWD systems is preferred.
• Experience and/or training in DFMEAs and root cause analysis required.
• Ability to use common software like O365 (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is required.
• Ability to read drawings with knowledge of GD&T is required.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical hardware design and development activities, including concept creation, system design calculations, and subsystem requirements definition.
• Coordinate product development by directing CAD, validation, purchasing, and other support teams to deliver designs, prototypes, and testing activities.
• Develop, review, and approve engineering documentation, specifications, drawings, prototype plans, and design releases.
• Lead technical reviews, DFMEAs, issue resolution, root cause investigations, and engineering change management activities.
• Drive communication and project execution through cross-functional meetings, issue escalation, and regular reporting of key technical risks and progress.
• Provide engineering support for the product throughout the development process.

POSITION SUMMARY

Lead an engineering team in the product development process for mechanical hardware of 4WD/AWD products in customer applications. This includes the development of the initial proposal based on known customer requirements, responsibility for the development and design of the product at each prototype phase, the validation of the product at prototype and production phase, and post-launch support.

ORGANIZATIONAL POSITION

The Applications Engineer – Mechanical (PEM) reports to the Manager of Applications Engineering - Mechanical. The PEM typically does not have direct reports, however, the PEM is technically responsible for leading an engineering project team through the product development process. This includes individuals responsible for CAD, component design, CAE, prototype build, and validation. It also involves interaction with individuals responsible for various other business functions such as sales, program management, manufacturing, and quality. The PEM also interacts with external teams and individuals, such as customers and suppliers.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Lead mechanical hardware design and development activities, including concept creation, system design calculations, and subsystem requirements definition.
• Coordinate product development by directing CAD, validation, purchasing, and other support teams to deliver designs, prototypes, and testing activities.
• Develop, review, and approve engineering documentation, specifications, drawings, prototype plans, and design releases.
• Lead technical reviews, DFMEAs, issue resolution, root cause investigations, and engineering change management activities.

• Provide engineering support for the product. This includes: Provide cross-functional engineering support to ensure successful integration, validation, and delivery of the product throughout the development process.
• Support the prototype and validation teams to develop, track, and coordinate engineering activities, including validation plans (ADVP&R) and issue resolution efforts.
• Support customer, sales, and program management teams by providing technical expertise, engineering data, requirements analysis, and development status updates.
• Serve as the technical resource to provide support for manufacturing, supply chain, and continuous improvement initiatives throughout the product lifecycle.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering required, Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred.
• Minimum of 4 years of engineering related work experience required, 8+ years preferred.
• Experience in powertrain, driveline, and/or 4WD/AWD systems is preferred.
• Experience and/or training in the development and maintenance of DFMEAs is required.
• Experience and/or training in root cause analysis is required.
• Ability to use common software like O365 (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc….) is required.
• Ability to read and understand drawings with knowledge of GD&T is required.
• Excellent communication skills required.
• Experience and/or training in APQP is preferred.
• Experience and/or training in DFM/DFA is preferred.
• Process knowledge in manufacturing and assembly is preferred.
• Knowledge of IATF 16949 requirements is preferred.

Salary Range: $88,800 - $124,875
