Job summary

xtscareers is hiring an Applications Engineer to support USGS National Geospatial Technical Operations Center. You’ll work on public-facing applications, learn existing systems, and improve functionality and data presentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field with 2+ years of software or applications engineering experience.
• Proficiency in JavaScript and ability to understand and improve existing code.
• Hands-on experience with AWS SDK and AWS CLI; familiarity with Lambda, S3, EC2 for data workflows.
• Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals: version control, debugging, testing, algorithms, data structures.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to develop practical solutions.

Job description

Behind the National Map is more than geographic data. There are applications, cloud environments, and development work that make that information accessible and useful to the people who reply to it.

This is an exciting opportunity to join us as an Applications Engineer to support the United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Geospatial Technical Operations Center. You'll help enhance and maintain the public-facing applications that bring authoritative geographic information to users through The National Map. As an Applications Engineer, you won't be starting from scratch. You'll step into existing applications, learn how they work, and help make them better—whether that means improving functionality, enhancing how data is presented, troubleshooting an issue, or finding a more efficient way for information to move through the environment.

JavaScript will be at the core of what you do, but your impact will stretch beyond the application itself. You'll work with AWS technologies to support and automate cloud-based data workflows, test and improve existing solutions, and think through how code can become more efficient and scalable as needs evolve. Along the way, you'll collaborate within a technical environment where solving the problem well matters just as much as getting the code to work.

Requirements

• Must have the ability to receive / maintain a favorable adjudicated Public Trust investigation (US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident for at least 3 years).
• You've achieved an accomplishment of a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field + 2 years of relevant experience in software or applications engineering.
• You’ve gained proficiency in JavaScript and an understanding of what makes code clean, efficient, and maintainable as much of this work involves existing applications, being able to understand someone else's code, troubleshoot it, and improve it will be important.
• You have hands-on experience with the AWS SDK and AWS CLI, along with familiarity with services such as Lambda, S3, and EC2 to support and automate cloud-based data processing workflows and help those workflows operate efficiently as needs grow.
• You have a solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including version control, debugging, testing, algorithms, and data structures to think beyond simply getting something to work and consider how it will perform and be maintained.
• You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to solve a technical problem, work through what is happening, and develop a practical solution.

Nice to Have

• Python experience.
• Experience with HTML, CSS, React, Angular, or other modern front-end technologies.
• Back-end development experience using Node.js or similar technologies.
• Familiar with RESTful API design and integration.
• Additional experience working within AWS, Azure, or other cloud environments.
• Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, or related Esri technologies.

The expected salary range is $65,000 to $75,000/annually. Actual pay will depend on experience, skills, and qualifications.
