We are seeking a senior-level HPC Systems & Scheduler Administrator to support an enterprise high-performance computing environment. This role will serve as a primary technical owner of the Linux operating system, Slurm scheduler, and Linux Virtual Desktop infrastructure, helping improve system reliability, workload throughput, and user experience.
The ideal candidate brings strong production HPC administration experience and works effectively with engineering, IT, cybersecurity, and performance teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Linux Systems Administration: Manage operating system configuration, patching, and security hardening for HPC compute, login, and head nodes. Maintain stability and compliance with organizational cybersecurity policies.
- Slurm Scheduler Administration: Own Slurm configuration, troubleshooting, and performance tuning, including partitions, scheduling policies, fair-share allocation, priority weighting, reservations, and Quality of Service (QoS) tiers.
- HPC Application Environments: Maintain environment module frameworks such as Lmod or Environment Modules, compiler toolchains, MPI libraries, and runtime environments supporting engineering simulation applications.
- Linux Virtual Desktop Administration: Manage desktop images, user sessions, standardized operating system configurations, and application delivery.
- Monitoring and Alerting: Deploy and maintain monitoring tools such as Ganglia, Grafana/Prometheus, or CloudWatch across compute, scheduler, and virtual desktop environments. Establish alert thresholds and coordinate on-call response procedures with IT teams.
- Scheduler Optimization: Tune scheduling policies to maximize throughput, reduce queue times, and prioritize workloads across the user community.
- System Performance Optimization: Identify and resolve bottlenecks involving network fabrics such as EFA or InfiniBand, I/O subsystems, and memory bandwidth. Collaborate with performance engineers on application-level profiling.
- User Access Management: Support Linux user provisioning, group administration, SSH key governance, and sudo/privilege management in coordination with identity management teams.
Technical Skills — Must Have
- Advanced Linux administration skills; experience with the RHEL, CentOS, or Rocky Linux ecosystem preferred.
- Deep expertise with Slurm Workload Manager, including configuration, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
- Demonstrated experience administering Linux virtual desktops or thin-client environments.
- Experience managing environment modules, compiler toolchains, and MPI runtimes, including OpenMPI, Intel MPI, or similar technologies.
- Experience with HPC networking concepts, including latency optimization, MPI tuning, and high-performance interconnects.
- Proficiency with system monitoring and observability tools.
Technical Skills — Nice to Have
- AWS cloud HPC experience, including AWS ParallelCluster, EC2 HPC instances, and EFA networking.
- Experience contributing to or supporting CI/CD pipelines for HPC configurations.
- Familiarity with GPU compute environments, including CUDA runtimes and GPU partitioning in Slurm.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity hardening standards for Linux HPC environments.
- Scripting proficiency in Python, Bash, or Ansible for automation.
