Job summary

OTC Industrial Technologies is seeking an Application Engineer in Norfolk to design and develop components and systems per customer requests, modifying existing designs as needed. You will apply engineering principles to meet customer specifications and manufacturing cost targets, draft using AutoCAD LT or SolidWorks, and support PLC/HMI programming with Siemens or Allen-Bradley systems.

Qualifications

• Associates degree or technical certificate in mathematics, mechanical technology or related field, or equivalent training/experience.
• Experience with AutoCAD LT or SolidWorks for drafting.
• Exposure to PLC/HMI programming (Siemens Simatic S7 or Allen Bradley RSLogix).
• Strong computer software skills (Excel, PowerPoint, PDF).

Responsibilities

• Review design requests and evaluate feasibility and cost.
• Define product requirements and plan design specifications.
• Assist with project management and supplier negotiations.
• Recommend improvements to reliability and performance; participate in CI activities.
• Resolve production issues with manufacturing teams.

Job description

The Application Engineer designs and develops components and systems per customer request, modifying existing designs. She/he applies engineering principles to develop mechanical or electronic/ electrical products/ systems that meet customer technical/functional specifications as well as manufacturing cost/efficiency requirements. He/she conducts mathematical modelling to determine if proposed designs are technically feasible.

What You'll Do:

• Review customer design requests, specifications, manuals and other data to evaluate the feasibility & cost of requested system/ product
• Defines customer product requirements, completes design specifications and plans accordingly to meet customer requirements
• Assists with project management (i.e. Obtain, evaluate competitive bids and negotiate with suppliers; Assist with production plans for projects, taking quality requirements and contract obligations into account)
• Regularly provides equipment/system/ process/ training recommendations to improve reliability and/or performance. Follows thru to completion. Fully participates in continuous improvement activities
• Resolves production problems that arise with manufacturing team
• All other duties as assigned

What You'll Need:

• Associates (two-year technical school) degree or certificate in technical discipline such as mathematics, mechanical technology, or equivalent. (Bachelor's in mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Industrial Science or other technical discipline preferred) or relevant training/education/experience in mechanical &/or electrical design for systems/ products/ assemblies”
• Can draft using either AutoCAD LT or SolidWorks
• Exposure to or the ability to programming PLC's and HMI's

• Demonstrated technical expertise in specified product segment
• Computer software skills (e.g. Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, Adobe PDF)
• Ability to work in a highly matrixed, cross-functional environment

• Sense of urgency; responds to requests in a timely manner.
• Strong (email, phone, web and in person) communication and customer service skills. (Prior experience in a customer service role preferred).
