Applications Engineer – Advanced Materials Testing

Working Pattern: Onsite, Monday-Friday

Travel: Approximately 20-30%

About the Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Applications / Product Development Engineer to join an established and growing manufacturer of advanced equipment and consumables used in materials characterization, metallography, microscopy and failure analysis.

This is a hands-on, technically varied role working at the intersection of engineering, customer applications, product development and semiconductor technology. The successful candidate will become a key technical resource supporting customers, sales teams and the continued development of innovative sample preparation solutions.

The role is particularly focused on a specific platform system used for electrical and physical failure analysis, semiconductor device testing, and precision sample preparation.

The position offers the opportunity to work on complex technical challenges, develop new applications, support customers globally and contribute directly to the development of next-generation equipment.

The Role

As an Applications / Product Development Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and optimising sample preparation methodologies across a range of materials and applications.

Working closely with product development, engineering, sales and customers, you will help identify technical challenges, develop practical solutions and demonstrate how advanced precision equipment can be applied to solve real-world problems.

While semiconductor and electronics failure analysis are core markets, there is significant opportunity to expand applications into materials research, universities, government laboratories, forensic science, quality control and other industries requiring precision material removal and sample preparation.

This role would suit someone who enjoys understanding how things work, solving problems independently and taking ownership of technical challenges from concept through to implementation.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and optimise sample preparation methods for semiconductors, metals, ceramics, coatings and other advanced materials.
• Prepare customer samples to support pre-sales evaluations, demonstrations and global sales initiatives.
• Investigate complex technical challenges and develop practical application solutions.
• Provide on-site and remote customer training covering equipment operation, methodologies and best practices.
• Deliver post-sales technical support and troubleshooting via phone, email and virtual sessions.
• Collaborate with Sales to assess application feasibility and support customer opportunities.
• Contribute to new product development through testing, validation and technical feedback to engineering.
• Help identify new applications, market opportunities and potential product or consumable developments.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, application notes and standard operating procedures.
• Maintain application data, images and technical information for internal and customer use.
• Travel internationally approximately 20-30% to support customer visits, training and industry events.

Essential / Preferred Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Materials Science or a related technical discipline preferred.
• Hands-on experience in materials characterisation, semiconductor failure analysis or a related technical field.
• Experience working in an applications laboratory, engineering environment or customer-facing technical role.
• Knowledge of semiconductor devices, packaging or advanced materials systems would be beneficial.
• Experience developing technical documentation, application notes or standard operating procedures.
• Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis abilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
• Strong interpersonal skills and confidence working with customers and internal teams.
• U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency, with the ability to travel internationally and hold a valid passport.
