Job summary

The Eastern District of California is seeking to fill an Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) in its Appellate Unit, based in Sacramento or Fresno. The AUSA will prepare all briefs filed in the Ninth Circuit and work with criminal and civil AUSAs on complex issues.

Responsibilities expand with training; candidates should have a JD and strong writing skills, with preferred appellate experience. Travel may be required; telework benefits exist.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree (or equivalent), bar admission in any U.S. jurisdiction, and at least 2 years of post‑J.D. experience.
• Active member in good standing of the bar is required.
• Strong legal writing; appellate or civil/criminal experience a plus.

Responsibilities

• Draft and edit briefs for the Ninth Circuit.
• Provide legal advice to prosecutors and civil litigators.
• Assist with motions practice, habeas corpus, or district court tasks as workload permits.
