The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) provides high-quality,patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinaryhealthcare team. Working collaboratively with physicians, nurses,and other healthcare professionals, the APP assesses, diagnoses,treats, and manages patients within their scope of practice andarea of specialty. The APP is responsible for deliveringevidence-based care, promoting positive patient outcomes,maintaining professional and regulatory standards, and supportingthe clinical, educational, and operational goals of the departmentand organization.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Advance Practice Professional(APP) is an individual with clinical skills and medical skills, andexpertise in the care of Gyn/Onc patients. The APP completescomprehensive patient health evaluations (including biological,social, and psychological assessments), considering their co-morbidconditions and overall disposition in collaboration with theappropriate clinical/faculty team. The APP assesses, directs, andcoordinates the educational and psychosocial needs of the patientand caretakers. The APP develops and reviews the plan of care withthe other members of the clinical team, participates in directingthat care, and coordinates discharge planning/and or follow-up (asapplicable). The APP participates in the education of residents andmedical/nursing students and performs diagnostic procedures andtherapeutic procedures.
Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and therequirements of the professional licensing or certificationauthority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Suchservice may include but are not limited to.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR NURSE PRACTITIONER:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
- Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’sDegree in Nursing.
- National Certification by one of the recognized APRNCertification Centers.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professionalRegistered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in WestVirginia.
- American Heart Association BLS Certification required withadditional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion ofthe department.
- APRNs must have RNFA certification, from an AORN approvedcertification program
EXPERIENCE:
- Gynecology, Oncology and or Acute care experiencepreferred.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
- WHNP, FNP or ACGNP certification

- Bachelor’s Degree as Physician Assistant or Master’s Degree asPhysician Assistant required.
- Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) trainingprogram required.
- Certification by the National Commission for Certification ofPhysician Assistants required.
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board ofMedicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- American Heart Association BLS Certification required withadditional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion ofthe department.
EXPERIENCE:

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The statements describedhere are intended to describe the general nature of work beingperformed by people assigned to this position. They are notintended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of allresponsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.
- Manages comprehensive and individualized care for Gyn/Oncpatients and their families in the inpatient phase ofhospitalization and in the ambulatory setting.
- Participates in Gyn/Onc patient care: Including daily rounds,consults, peri-procedural/peri-operative evaluations; which mayinclude, but is not limited to, first assist in the operativesuite
- Participates in peri-operative management of patient which mayinclude, but not limited to, 1st assisting in the operativesuite.
- Completes integrated and comprehensive assessments.
- With the collaboration of Gyn/Onc faculty or by followingestablished clinical Guidelines and Protocols, orders additionaltests or consults as deemed appropriate.
- Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests followingestablished clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staffregarding abnormal findings in the evaluation and management ofpatients.
- Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations anddocuments succinctly and comprehensively all findings in medicalrecord.
- Facilitates patient discharge and or follow-up bydirecting/coordinating appropriate services and tests prior todischarge necessary for outpatient follow-up appointments in theclinic (as applicable).
- Performs necessary procedures following established clinicalguidelines and Protocols and scope of practice (SOP), and for whichthe Gyn/Onc APP is privileged by WVUM to perform.
- Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for Gyn/Oncpatients, which includes teaching, discharge planning and necessaryreferral to other members of the health care team asnecessary.
- Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the agecontinuum of their educational experience and certification.
- Participate in physician rounds, as applicable.
- Identifies unstable or complex patient care situations andfacilitates appropriate intervention in the clinic and/or hospitalsetting.
- Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effectiveemergency care.
- Evaluates Gyn/Onc patients and serves direction for thecoordination of follow up procedures and tests in the ambulatorysetting (as applicable).
- Assists in the collection of outcome measures (asapplicable).
- Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skillsin clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation, andmanagement of the individual needs of patients/families.
- Demonstrates the ability to utilize equipment in a safemanner.
- Bases decisions made/actions taken on the relevant scientificprinciples, established standards of care and/or researchfindings.
- Utilizes teaching/learning theory and appropriate teachingstrategies in the provision of education to nursing staff, hospitalstaff, students, patients, families and the community.
- Promotes an environment that facilitates learning by respondingto appropriate patient/family preferences, priorities, andreadiness to learn.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of patient/family teaching andcollaborates with the nursing and clinical staff in the completionof education plan.
- Updates own knowledge base throughout the year.
- Completes all identified clinical competencies.
- Serves as a resource person for staff caring for the Gyn/Oncpatient.
- Provides educational programs to professional andparaprofessional personnel in area of expertise.
- Mentors nursing personnel in all levels of clinicalpractice.
- Participates in community programs, distribution of literature,as appropriate in area of expertise.
- Communicates effectively with patients/families, physician, andancillary services at all levels to assure coordinated efficientpatient care.
- Documents the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations in aclear and concise manner for every patient visit in the patient’smedical record following approved hospital/UHA policies andcompliance standards for documentation.
- Documents all interventions in the patient’s medical recordfollowing approved hospital/UHA policies and compliance standardsfor documentation.
- Collaborates with other leaders and staff to effectively achievepatient outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provides leadership in the development and implantation ofchanges in the Gyn/Onc practice that positively impact patientoutcomes.
- Works collaboratively with medical and nursing staff tofacilitate creative problem solving and provide professionalsupport.
- Participates and initiates inter-disciplinary approaches topatient care, program development and education. Serves as aprofessional role model.
- Promotes and practices innovation of the expanded role in thedelivery of care to Gyn/Onc patients and families throughout theinpatient hospitalization, and the ambulatory setting.
- Participates and provides leadership for committees and taskforces.
- Documents hours and submits billing reports, asappropriate.
- Participates in the WVUH/UHA Performance Improvement Plan.
- Applies information from Performance Improvement activities,changing practice as necessary, to improve care provided topatients.
- Reviews and interprets Gyn/Onc data from sources such as patientregistries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, accessto care, and cost per case reports and recommends/implementschanges as necessary.
- Participates in clinical trials and research studies with thePrincipal Investigator.
- Assists Faculty, Administrators and Directors in the collectionof outcome measures.
- Adheres to the established Performance Expectations for UHAEmployees in the areas of People, Service, Performance Improvement,and Shared Values & Culture.
- Oversees and provides comprehensive and individualized care forevaluating and managing patients in the infusion center withinpractice scope.
- Identifies unstable of complex hem/onc patient care situationsand facilitates appropriate intervention in the infusion center,clinic, and/or hospital setting.
- Provides direct supervision of patients in the infusion centeruntil last patient receiving an infusion leaves the infusioncenter.
- Other duties/projects as assigned.
