Job summary

Top Score Education Inc. is seeking a part-time, 1-1 in-home high school tutor in Northern Virginia, DC, or Maryland. The role focuses on AP Literature and AP Language, with opportunities to tutor honors English, creative writing, or college essay prep.

You will conduct 60–120 minute lessons in students' homes, weekdays 4–10 pm and weekends, with travel up to 30 minutes and a travel bonus. A Bachelor's degree is preferred, and AP classroom experience is encouraged.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in English, Humanities, Education, or related field.
• Experience tutoring AP Literature and AP Language; strong grasp of rhetorical analysis and essay composition.
• Bonus points for experience in honors English, creative writing, or college essay prep.

The Position

We are seeking a part-time, 1-1, in-home high school tutor in Northern Virginia, DC, or Maryland. To be competitive, it would be ideal if you have past experience teaching/tutoring AP Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition. Bonus points if you also have experience teaching or tutoring honors English, creative writing, or college essay prep.

Ideal Candidate

• Instructional Expertise: Experience tutoring or teaching AP Literature, AP Language, and high school English courses. We value tutors with a strong grasp of rhetorical analysis, literary critique, and essay composition skills.
• Education: Bachelor's degree required (degree in English, Humanities, Education, or a related field preferred).
• Background: Current or former AP Literature and/or AP Language classroom teachers are highly encouraged to apply!
• Interpersonal Skills: Energized to foster positive relationships with our client families.
• Organization: Highly focused, organized, keen time management, attention to detail, and ability to follow processes.
• Communication: Fast, consistent, and direct communication.
• Collaboration: Committed to continuous student/tutor/team collaboration.

Duties

• Academic planning and instruction (including AP exam strategy, essay drafting/editing, and literary analysis).
• Conduct 60-120 minute private individual lessons in student homes, weekdays 4-10 pm, and/or weekends.
• Develop and maintain genuine, positive, and consistent communication with parents and students.

Compensation

Top Score Education offers highly competitive compensation. The starting pay range for this role is $45-$65 per hour. As they grow and develop with our company, Top Score Tutors can earn up to $80 per hour.

Logistical Requirements

• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
• A weekly commitment of a minimum of 8 teaching hours per week (for example, 1-2 weekday evenings and one weekend day).
• Consistent access to a car (work is primarily in students’ homes 1:1) and willingness to drive up to 30 minutes to a lesson (travel bonus for longer travel).
