Job summary

Regal Technology Partners in Santa Ana, CA, is seeking an AOI Engineer to own in-process detection programs, SPI, AOI, and X-Ray for NPI and sustaining engineering. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering (or equivalent) preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of related working experience in SMT/electronics manufacturing.
  • Experienced with SMT machinery and processes (screen printing, pick and place, reflow).
  • Able to generate SPI/AOI programs and read/interpret board schematics and engineering drawings.
  • Expertise in engineering principles sufficient to perform comprehensive line quality troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  • Working knowledge of IPC-A-610 acceptance criteria preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, create, and maintain SPI/AOI/X-Ray programs and ensure process documentation is completed and updated in time for production.
  • Develop and provide SPI/AOI/X-Ray programs and technical support for new product introduction (NPI).
  • Monitor SPI/AOI/X-Ray inspection and detection windows and modify as necessary to increase machine capability, reduce false calls, and improve quality.
  • Troubleshoot SMT process issues (SPI/AOI/X-Ray) to root cause and implement corrective actions in response to internal and external quality feedback.
  • Perform comprehensive line quality troubleshooting using sound engineering principles.
  • Analyze defect trends, generate reports, and recommend corrective actions to improve product quality.
  • Maintain and upgrade machine capability through engineering benchmarking projects.
  • Perform routine maintenance, updates, and calibration oversight on AOI and X-Ray equipment to ensure consistent performance.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance inspection accuracy, cycle time, and overall production efficiency.
  • Stay current on industry trends and AOI/X-Ray technology advancements to enhance inspection techniques.
  • Collaborate with Quality (QMM) and customers to ensure inspection processes support product quality and manufacturing efficiency.

The AOI Engineer works cross-functionally with engineering, quality, production, and customers to ensure inspection processes support product quality and manufacturing efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
Inspection Programming & Process Engineering
  • Plan, create, and maintain SPI/AOI/X-Ray programs and ensure process documentation is completed and updated in time for production
  • Develop and provide SPI/AOI/X-Ray programs and technical support for new product introduction (NPI)
  • Monitor SPI/AOI/X-Ray inspection and detection windows and modify as necessary to increase machine capability, reduce false calls, and improve quality
  • Continuously review and improve the strategy and technology used in SPI/AOI inspection processes
Troubleshooting & Quality
  • Troubleshoot SMT process issues (SPI/AOI/X-Ray) to root cause and implement corrective actions in response to internal and external quality feedback
  • Perform comprehensive line quality troubleshooting using sound engineering principles
  • Analyze defect trends, generate reports, and recommend corrective actions to improve product quality
  • Assist in major machine breakdown troubleshooting and coordinate repairs or maintenance as needed
  • Work with Quality (QMM) on in-process and line audits
Systems, Equipment & Continuous Improvement
  • Ensure area computers and network systems are maintained in operational condition, with inspection programs regularly updated and backed up
  • Maintain and upgrade machine capability through engineering benchmarking projects
  • Perform routine maintenance, updates, and calibration oversight on AOI and X-Ray equipment to ensure consistent performance
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance inspection accuracy, cycle time, and overall production efficiency
  • Stay current on industry trends and AOI/X-Ray technology advancements to enhance inspection techniques
Collaboration & Training
  • Participate in new product development discussions and contribute ideas in the areas of PCB assembly automation and process technology
  • Work with the engineering systems team on new release processes for SPI/AOI/X-Ray-related programs
  • Provide training in machine maintenance, operation, and detection processes to technical support personnel
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, management, and customers

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and use hands to operate standard office and inspection equipment.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to work in environments that include manufacturing floors, clean rooms, and test labs, with occasional exposure to machinery or moving parts.
