Job Description

Job Goal: To administer and supervise all the activities and personnel within an assigned school, and to work to establish an educational environment that motivates faculty and students to develop to their fullest possible potential.

Qualifications
  • Valid Alabama teacher's certificate.
  • Master's degree, administrative certification from an accredited college/university and three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Essential Functions
  • Demonstrate leadership, administrative and supervisory qualities.
  • Manage, evaluate, and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the school including instructional programs, extracurricular activities, and discipline systems to ensure a safe and orderly climate, building maintenance, program evaluation, personnel management, office operations, and emergency procedures.
  • Supervise the instructional programs of the school, evaluating lesson plans and observing classes on a regular basis to encourage the use of a variety of instructional strategies and materials consistent with research on learning and child growth and development and in line with the district's instructional expectations.
  • Coordinate and assist in recruiting, screening, interviewing, selecting, training, and assigning of the school's certified and classified staff.
  • Supervise, observe, and evaluate all certified and classified staff.
  • Interpret and enforce federal and state laws and state and local board policies.
  • Supervise school finances by preparing and recommending capital and operating budgets for the school, establish and maintain fiscal records, and control expenditures within approved budgets.
  • Assume responsibility for scheduling and determining the work assignment of all professional personnel assigned to the school.
  • Assist in the development organization, and administration of the school's extracurricular and co-curricular programs.
  • Ensure that students receive appropriate placement and services.
  • Assume responsibility for his/her own professional growth and development through membership and participation in pro‑fessional organizations and meetings and attendance at regional, state and national meetings.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication.
  • Become proficient and knowledgeable relative to all aspects of the school's computerized student management system.
  • Develop and encourage programs of orientation and professional growth for teachers and others within the school.
  • Provide professional development activities for assistant principals.
  • Collaborate with assistant principals in daily operations of the school.
  • Provide an environment of high expectations for staff and students.
  • Confer and cooperate with central office personnel in the total operation of the school program.
  • Maintain effective communication with the staff and District through planning and informational meetings.
  • Maintain effective two-­way communications and favorable relationships with parents, individuals, and community groups to foster understanding and solicit support for school programs, objectives, and needs.
  • Willingness to participate in educational, civic and community involvement.
  • Maintain standards of student discipline designed to command the respect of students and parents and to minimize school and classroom interruptions.
  • Provide proper supervision for all student activities both on and off campus.
  • Ensure a safe learning and working environment through the maintenance of student order and discipline, planning and supervision of emergency preparedness programs as required by law, and coordination of safety inspections.
  • Knowledgeable of special education policy and procedures, specifically in the area of discipline, and insure all requirements of special education are met.
  • Direct and supervise all school support services and physical plant operations to ensure the proper care, maintenance, neatness, and cleanliness of the school's buildings and grounds.
  • Take responsibility for securing, maintaining, and managing material resources.
  • This position will be subject to the Students First Act of 2011. Madison City Schools reserves the right to fill this position by transfer of a qualified applicant who is already employed by Madison City Schools.
  • Under the Students First Act of 2011, no credit toward tenure or non‑probationary status is earned in the initial school year of employment if the date of hire occurs after September 30.
