Job summary

Springfield Public Schools in Western Massachusetts is seeking an LPN to join the Nursing Department in a school health setting. The nurse will assess students, administer medications with consent, and coordinate care with families and school staff to meet individual needs.

The position requires 1–2 years in child health or related clinical nursing, MA LPN license, and CPR/First Aid certification. Work schedule is arranged with the Principal and Nursing Supervisor per contract.

Qualifications

  • 1–2 years of child health or related clinical nursing experience.
  • MA LPN license is required.
  • CPR and First Aid certification from a recognized provider, renewable bi-annually.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and evaluate students’ medical history and health needs.
  • Identify nursing service needs in the school setting using evidence-based practice.
  • Develop and implement a plan of care with input from student and family.
  • Coordinate care with school staff and community providers as needed.
  • Administer prescribed medications with guardian and physician consent.
  • Provide health education and preventive care information in collaboration with district programs.
  • Maintain professional standards and stay current with trends in school nursing.

WORK SCHEDULE: To be arranged with the Principal and the Nursing Supervisor of Nursing (In accordance with contract requirements).

Duties
  • Assess and evaluate students’ medical history, including social, behavioral, psychological and familial concerns
  • Utilizing evidenced based practice, identify need for appropriate nursing services in the school setting
  • Initiate a plan of care with student and family input to best meet needs of individual student
  • Implement plan of care with consultation with school staff and community providers as necessary
  • Evaluate effectiveness of interventions and revise plan as necessary.
  • Provides care for students in special needs classroom as assigned
  • Administer prescribed and approved medication to students with parent/guardian and physician consent
  • Conducts home visits to initiate or follow up on the health care needs of students.
  • Notify appropriate individuals, ie building nurse, parents, staff, physicians of immediate and potential health related concerns
  • Provides information about health and disease prevention in cooperation with health education programs within Springfield Public Schools
  • Promotes healthy programs in collaboration with coalitions, associations, CDC and Department of Public Health
  • Acts as a resource in health education to students and families and refers to appropriate help agencies when necessary
  • Report to work as scheduled and conducts self in professional manner.
  • Is a role model for other nurses and for students in SPS
  • Maintain certification and registration and seeks out own learning experiences to keep current with new trends.
Physical Requirements
  • No lifting, bending or twisting restrictions. Must be able to ambulate quickly and walk up four flights of stairs.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of one to two years of child health, community health or other relevant clinical nursing experience
  • A valid and current Licensed Practical Nurse License by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification by a recognized provider, renewable bi-annually.
