UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX is seeking an Animal Care Attendant to support the Animal Resources Center. You will care for laboratory animals, assist with feeding, and ensure clean, safe housing and proper records.

The role requires following SOPs, maintaining health observations, and assisting with animal handling as needed. This full-time position emphasizes weekend coverage as required, adherence to safety guidelines, and collaboration with veterinary staff to ensure high

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience in animal caretaking.
  • Ability to understand and follow SOPs and quality assurance standards.
  • Ability to work weekends as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care, feeding and transportation of laboratory animals.
  • Monitor daily animal health and welfare; perform health observations.
  • Assist with restraint, handling and manipulation of animal species as needed.
  • Maintain animal housing records and assist with transport of animals.
  • Sanitize facilities and equipment; follow safety procedures.

Job Summary

Works under close supervision of Animal Resources Supervisor to provide care, feeding, and transportation of laboratory animals, including cleanliness and maintenance of associated facilities. Provide animal husbandry in quarantine, isolation, biohazard, conventional, or barrier-sustained areas.

Previous experience in animal caretaking

Job Duties
  • Review, comprehend, and comply with all SOPs and quality assurance standards pertaining to specific area.
  • Monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations and animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include: perform daily water/cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; observe all animals present and record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.
  • Assist with restraint, handling, and manipulation of various animal species as assigned by the on-site Supervisor.
  • Receive, identify and house selected animal species; maintain related records. Receive, inspect and pack/unpack animals for transport; ensure and provide for sentinel animals in each rodent housing area. Maintain rodent sentinels as described in the rodent sentinel SOP's for housing and daily care.
  • Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines. Sanitize facilities, animal housing units, and ancillary animal care equipment.
  • May perform minor medical treatments of animals as directed by the veterinary staff.
  • Perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures. Comply with and wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Observe and report problems involving animal care equipment and environmental support systems.
  • Maintain accurate departmental animal housing or support area record keeping.
  • Maintain required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed. Ability to work weekends as assigned.
  • Perform tasks of Animal Care Attendant as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
