Job summary

Mt. Lebanon seeks an Animal Control Officer to enforce animal-related laws within Mt. Lebanon and neighboring communities.

The role requires responding to calls, handling, restraining and transporting animals, and maintaining shelter operations. Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, a Pennsylvania driver’s license, and the legal authority to possess a firearm. Training will cover ordinances, court testimony, and report writing.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of physical and behavioral characteristics of common breeds of dogs and cats; animal licensing and regulatory ordinances; equipment used in animal control.
• Ability to safely and effectively use tools and equipment and to learn these functions within nine months.
• Ability to testify in court and prosecute cases as the citing officer; learn relevant laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Respond to animal control requests in Mt. Lebanon and participating communities.
• Address complaints regarding animals running at large, abused animals, or injured/dead animals.
• Decide course of action including humane euthanasia when necessary.
• Rescue/capture/assist with dangerous animals and wild animals trapped in homes/garages.
• Obtain accurate information from complainants and log details (location, breeds, licenses, etc.).
• Investigate violations and testify in court or administrative hearings as needed.
• Maintain records and prepare daily, monthly, and annual reports.
