Job summary

Jackson County Animal Shelter (JCAS) in Sylva, NC, seeks an Animal Control Officer to enforce state and county animal and rabies laws, manage intake, records, and owner notifications, and supervise volunteers. The role requires on-call availability, nights, and weekends based on department needs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum 1 year experience in animal control or related law enforcement.
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license required.
• Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET).
• Certified Rabies Vaccinator (CRV).
• Certified National Animal Control Association (NACA).

Responsibilities

• Receive animals into the JCAS and document intake.
• Maintain records of impounded animals and fees.
• Release animals to owners or adopt to the public.
• Vaccinate and medically treat animals as needed.
• Document all treatments in medical records.
• Assist humane society with transport to clinics.
• Transport animals to veterinarians for treatment.
• Assign work to volunteers and community service workers.
• Enforce Jackson County Dog Control Ordinance and NC Rabies laws.
• Respond to animal nuisance complaints and perform abatement as needed.
• Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Engage with community organizations to promote services.
• Support adoption and care of animals in the shelter.
• Participate in Public Health Preparedness and emergencies.
