Job summary

The City of Bellmead, Texas is seeking an Animal Control Officer to enforce local ordinances and state laws protecting animals within city limits. You will patrol, respond to complaints, relocate animals, and assist with quarantines and testing as needed.

You will also educate the public on responsible pet ownership, maintain accurate records, and support a positive work environment while reporting to the Support Services Police Lieutenant. A valid Texas Class C driver license is required.

Qualifications

• A High School diploma or equivalent is required and two (2) years of experience in the care and handling of animals or other animal related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must have completed the Animal Control Officer Basic Training or complete within six (6) months from date of hire.
• Possession of a valid Class C Texas driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Enforce animal control and issue warnings and citations for violations.
• Patrol the city to identify and respond to animal nuisances and welfare issues.
• Respond, investigate, and resolve complaints including rabies control and dangerous animals.
• Relocate animals, administer euthanasia drugs when needed, and transport to facilities.
• Investigate animal abuse, bites, and quarantine animals as required.
• Provide public education on animal control ordinances and responsible pet ownership.
• Maintain records, write reports, and keep files up to date.
• Transport police vehicles as needed and ensure reliable attendance.

Animal Control Officer Job Summary

Under the direction of the Support Services Police Lieutenant, the Animal Control Officer is to protect and serve the public by enforcing the City of Bellmead animal control ordinances and state laws for the control, care, and protection of domestic and wild animals within the city limits.

SUPERVISION

RECEIVES direct supervision from the Support Services Police Lieutenant.

EXERCISES no supervision.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Animal Control
• Patrol the City to identify and respond appropriately to all animal nuisances.
• Respond, investigate, and resolve customer complaints in the areas of animal nuisance, city code violations, animal welfare, rabies control and dangerous animals.
• Deliver and demonstrate the proper use of traps, setting traps, picking up trapped animals and relocating the animal or administering euthanasia drugs.
• Investigate reports of animal abuse.
• Investigate animal bites and potential rabies exposures; if appropriate, quarantine animals and run appropriate tests.
• Respond to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis.
• Enforce and issue warnings and citations for violations of animal control and licensing ordinances.
• Impound, transport, quarantine, and dispose of stray and other animals, including those who are sick, injured or potentially dangerous.
• Clean, disinfect, and maintain the animal holding areas to ensure disease management protocol, including animal control vehicle.
• Pick up and dispose of deceased animals when able or directed to do so.
• Public Relations
• Provide public education regarding animal control ordinances and responsible pet ownership duties.
• Aid other public agencies and community groups related to animal control activities.
• Explain ordinances relating to the care and keeping of animals to the public.
• Records and Reports
• Write reports and record data on appropriate log/forms; maintain up-to-date records and files
• Other Duties
• Transport police vehicles to and from automotive maintenance facilities as needed.
• Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Foster a positive, collaborative, and harmonious work environment, discouraging negative behavior.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:

A High School diploma or equivalent is required and two (2) years of experience in the care and handling of animals or other animal related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

• Must have successfully completed the Animal Control Officer Basic Training as mandated by the Texas Department of State Health Services or be able to complete the training within six (6) months from date of hire.
• Possession of a valid Class C Texas driver's license.
