City of Cedar Hill is seeking a capable Animal Services Officer to enforce local and state animal laws and to support the Tri-City Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. The role involves capturing and transporting animals, investigating complaints, and preparing court documents as needed.

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid Texas driver’s license, and certifications in Basic Animal Control and Humane Euthanasia within defined timelines.

Qualifications

  • No experience required; however prior animal services experience is preferred.
  • Must obtain Basic Animal Control Certification within one year of hire.
  • Must obtain Humane Euthanasia Certification within 120 days of hire.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CJIS clearance with the Police Department for necessary computer and building access.
  • Must successfully complete a six (6) month new hire introductory period.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce animal control ordinances by patrolling streets and impounding stray or injured animals.
  • Investigate citizen complaints and file charges on animal cruelty cases; issue citations for non-compliance.
  • Deliver animals to Tri-City Animal Shelter and prepare shelter entry paperwork.
  • Vaccinate, microchip, bathe and care for animals; perform or assist in euthanasia when required.
  • Provide coverage to Tri-City Shelter and partner cities (Desoto and Duncanville) as needed.

Job description

The purpose of this position is to monitor the City’s animal population by enforcing applicable laws and regulations put in place by the City and State regarding animals within city limits. Duties include enforcing and ensuring compliance with animal control ordinances, enforcing rabies eradication laws, investigating complaints from citizens, impounding animals, preparing prosecution documents for court, cleaning of vehicle, cleaning kennels, humane euthanasia, vaccinating animals, microchipping animals, humane education, providing coverage and support within the Tri-City Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, as needed, and other duties as assigned. Cooperatively work as part of the Animal Services team, within the Tri-City Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, this position interfaces with other City employees and citizens, including providing coverage and support to the cities of Desoto and Duncanville, as needed. This position does not provide direction to other employees.

  • Provides premier customer service to citizens, internal and external customers by responding to requests in a positive, timely, effective and professional manner. Serves as cooperative member of the Animal Services team.
  • Enforces rabies eradication laws by investigating animal bite reports and ensuring animals are quarantined at a licensed facility or a specimen is properly prepared and shipped.
  • Seeks out and identifies changing trends and policies in animal welfare ordinances.
  • Investigates complaints from citizens by investigating and filing charges on cases of animal cruelty and citing citizens who own wild or dangerous animals.
  • Enforces animal control ordinances by patrolling the streets, impounding stray and injured animals and picking up and removing dead animals.
  • Ensures compliance with animal control ordinances by issuing written notices and citations for failure to comply.
  • Prepares court documents needed for summons, delivery and prosecution of City County, and State court cases.
  • Delivers animals safely to the Tri-City Animal Shelter in a timely manner and prepares proper paperwork for shelter entry.
  • Responds to calls and completes appropriate call notes and reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provides coverage and support as needed to the animal shelter and shelter staff, regularly as assigned, by assisting with cleaning animal cages, sweeping and mopping floors, loading and unloading food and cat litter, removing trash, maintaining and cleaning equipment and cleaning the bathrooms; Cares for animals by feeding and watering animals, exercising and bathing animals, performing vaccinations, assisting in the impounding of animals, performing or assisting in euthanizing animals, and maintaining/cleaning the freezer and cooler areas. Must be able to hold animals and restrain on a leash.
  • Provides support and coverage, when assigned, to partners of the animal shelter including on call coverage for the Tri-City partner cities of Duncanville and Desoto.
  • Regular attendance required, including on-call coverage. This position is subject to working nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
  • Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
