Job Description: Animal Care Technician I

Location: Mattawan, MI

Openings: 20+ (Ongoing monthly hiring through end of year)

Duration: 3–6 months, temp-to-perm

Pay Rate: $19/hr.

Shift Options: Multiple shifts available (detailed below)

Conversion Potential: Based on performance

Position Overview

As an Animal Care Technician I, you will join the Animal Care Services group and play a vital role in ensuring the humane care and housing of various animals including rats, mice, rabbits, dogs, cats, pigs, and monkeys. This is an entry-level role with training provided. No previous animal care experience is required, making it ideal for recent high school graduates or candidates with backgrounds in caregiving, farming, medical fields, customer service, or retail.

Training & Shift Schedules

Training Schedule (First Month):

  • Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Monday – Friday (with weekend and holiday rotations): 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Saturday – Wednesday (with holiday rotations): 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Wednesday – Sunday (with holiday rotations): 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Second Shift Option: Monday – Friday, 2:30 PM – 11:00 PM

Note: All shifts require flexibility for potential overtime and short-notice schedule changes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide gentle and humane care for all animals
  • Learn and perform tasks including animal husbandry, handling, equipment cleaning, and maintenance
  • Maintain and clean cages and housing areas
  • Use PPE consistently
  • Document tasks and review data in electronic systems
  • Maintain compliance with safety and regulatory standards (GLP, SOP, IACUC, etc.)

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Experience: No prior experience required (entry-level)
  • Certifications: None required
  • Soft Skills: Team-oriented, motivated, good communication skills, reliable
  • Preferred Backgrounds: Farming, caregiving, hospital/medical experience, retail, 4H, customer service

Additional Information

  • Interviews:
  • Held every Wednesday (1 round, onsite panel interview)
  • Scheduled immediately after screening
  • Interview day duration: ~3 hours
  • Include availability in submission
  • Background Check/Drug Screen: Must be cleared by 12 PM Thursday before start date
