Responsibilities

  • Provide animal care for assigned laboratory animals, including feeding and housing.
  • Follow schedules for husbandry, care, and housing with minimal supervision.
  • Report health or behavioral issues to appropriate staff.
  • Maintain animal inventory records and room maintenance logs.
  • Cover multiple areas in the animal facility as needed.
  • Operate cage-wash, autoclave and related equipment; prepare cages and supplies.
  • Perform euthanasia on small laboratory animals as required.
  • Assist with receiving and processing incoming animals and supplies.
  • Participate in meetings and ongoing training; support DLAM veterinary staff.

Animal Care Technician
About the Opportunity

The Animal Care Technician provides husbandry and care tolaboratory animals, maintains animal inventory records and AnimalHusbandry and Room Maintenance Records and performs facilitysanitation in DLAM's Animal Facilities. This person is required tocomplete assigned work schedules with little to no supervision. Thetechnician should be able to work independently and make correctdecisions in their daily routine. The position requires weekend andholiday work hours. The position involves daily exposure tolaboratory animals and their waste products.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency degree. A minimum of two yearsof animal care experience. ALAT certification preferred.

Job Duties
  • The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge andskills necessary to provide appropriate animal care for his/herassigned responsibilities.
  • With little to no supervision, follow assigned schedules forhusbandry, care and housing of laboratory animals. Technicianresponsible for feeding, watering, and cleaning the cage of theirassigned animals.
  • Reports all animal heath or behavioral problems to theappropriate staff.
  • Maintains animal inventory records and Animal Husbandry andRoom Maintenance Records for each assigned room.
  • Able to cover and work in all/most areas in animalfacility.
  • Reports all facility and environmental issues to theDirector.
  • Provide guidance and on the job training to new animaltechnicians.
  • Provide assistance with receiving and processing incominganimals and supplies
  • Sanitizes and maintains the animal research facilityequipment.
  • Operates cage-wash, autoclave, and other animal facilityrelated equipment.
  • Assembles and prepares caging supplies for use in the animalfacility.
  • Performs euthanasia on small laboratory animals.
  • Participates in technician meetings as scheduled by supervisorystaff.
  • Participates in continuing education training programsthroughout employment as requested
  • May be trained to provide specialized technical assistance tothe DLAM Veterinary Staff and investigator staff.
  • Required to work weekend and holidays. Occasional overtime workis also required to cover work due to absences of other animal caretechnicians.
  • Required to comply and follow DLAM and NU-IACUC policies andprocedures.
  • Performs all other duties necessary for the proper functioningof the animal facility as assigned by the supervisory staff.
