Position Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking an experienced, part‑time animal care specialist to oversee care and welfare for aquatic and other organisms with diverse care requirements. The preferred schedule will be Fridays and weekends up to 24 hours/week.

Essential Functions
  • Experience and familiarity with best practices for culturing a wide variety of aquatic organisms and ant colonies, including freshwater, brackish, and marine vertebrate and invertebrate animals.
  • General husbandry of animal collections such as jellies, marine arthropods/crustaceans, other aquatic invertebrates, and freshwater teleost fish.
  • Maintaining compliance with university Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines.
  • Managing quarantine systems, especially fish quarantine, and identifying potential needs for veterinary intervention.
  • Maintaining complex life support systems for cultured animals.
  • Fabricating and selecting tanks and other elements of culture systems; building new culture systems as needed.
  • Monitoring, recording, and adjusting environmental variables (temperature, light, water quality, salinity, food sources, filtration systems) to optimize animals’ health and reproductive viability.
  • Keeping accurate, detailed records of care, maintenance, and animals’ health and life cycle events.
Prerequisite Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or in a relevant field.
  • At least 1-year full-time experience in aquatic animal husbandry.
  • Specific experience managing aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates preferred.
  • At least 1 year experience managing quarantine systems preferred.
  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
Salary Information

In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the hourly rate for this position is $33.00 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
