Job summary

The University of Miami is hiring an Animal Cage Washer at the Medical Campus to maintain clean work areas, sanitize cages, prepare animal rooms, bedding, and supplies. The role also handles logs, waste disposal, deliveries, and general animal care support.

Must be able to work evenings, nights, and weekends; lift up to 50 pounds; and possess a High School Diploma. ALAT certification is preferred and strongly encouraged.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • ALAT certification at Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level preferred and encouraged.
  • 6 months to 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Willing to work in a damp environment.
  • Able to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Sanitizes and washes animal cages and equipment.
  • Sanitizes and disinfects animal rooms, corridors, and animal areas (i.e. cage/rack-washing areas).
  • Assembles, autoclaves, and prepares animal equipment and supplies.
  • Maintenance of cage and rack-washers, verifies autoclave temperatures, and maintains accurate logs.
  • Prepares bedding, caging, food and water.
  • Receipt of supplies and proper storage and stocking according to established SOP's.
  • Animal room disinfection/sanitization, including power washing of large animal areas.
  • Participation in the department's Emergency Response Team as Essential Personnel is required.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Animal Cage Washer maintains clean work areas, sanitizes, disinfects and prepares animal rooms, and supplies. Prepares cages, bedding, feed, water, protective personal equipment (PPE) and equipment to maintain the animals and facility. Maintains and runs cage and rack washers, hydopac machine, bottle fillers, and other associated animal care equipment. Keeps up with records for associated logs to document all aspects of work. Responsible for waste removal and disposal of, as well as assisting with animal deliveries, transporting, supply receipt/storage, and maintenance of animal records.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience.

Certification and Licensing:
American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level is preferred and will be strongly encouraged.

Experience:
Minimum 6 mos - 1 year of relevant experience. Knowledge of animal research facilities and experience working in environments that support multiple animal species including Non-Human Primates (NHP) and Virus Antigen Free (VAF) rodents is a plus. Must be willing to work in a damp environment. Any appropriate combination of relevant education and/or work experience may be considered.

Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends is required. Must be able to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds without assistance.
